Help ! HDTV Dilemma ...

I'm torn.

I scored a 50 inch Samsung plasma TV for $1800 on BF. Originally I had set out for the BB 42 inch Pany plasma but so had everyone else obviously. I then found myself in a different store where I got lucky and was able to score a 50 inch version of the Pany for $1600, really a better deal than the 42 for $999 at BB. But I hated the chassis, and even worse, the Samsung was right next to the Pany, and it was not only beautiful, IMHO the picture quality was significantly better than the Pany's. So I passed on the Pany and found the Samsung deal at yet another store.

But then I got home and started reading reviews on the Samsung. Seems there are major issues with a "loud buzzing sound" and LOTS of people are not happy.

Now that the luster was off of my formerly-great deal, I also began to rue that this was not a 1080p TV. I fully knew that; in fact, none of the TV's I had contemplated was - mostly because a couple years down the line I would then be buying something else to serve as my "main" TV. This current TV would then go somewhere else in the house, and probably on a wall mount, thus my focus now on a flat panel. With the cost of non-OTA HD programming for me (approx. $99/mo total for 8 non-OTA channels), the fact that this TV would be used for a lot of DVD watching, and the likelihood that I would use some PC connectivity, 720p seemed adequate - for now at least.

But now I am thinking of returning the Samsung and going with one of Sony's SXRD rear projection units. I'd have 1080p and thus more future-proofing, and no "buzzing" worries. Plus, these Sonys not only look good but their reviews (AVS, etc.) are tops as well.

If anybody has any thoughts on this, pro or con, I'd appreciate it ...

I would definitely go for the Sony SXRD 50".

If I could do it all over again that's the TV I would have bought.

I think CC had a killer deal on the SXRD during BF. Buy one and get a free PS3, something like that.

I just hope I can resist the "upgrade" itch for 4 years. LOL my Toshiba 50" DLP is only 4 months old, it's going to be a LOOOOOOOONG 4 yr wait.

Actually it was CompUSSR. They had the 60 incher + XBOX (core) for $1999.

Really blew it missing that one ...

Just bought a 60" SXRD A2000 (non-XBR2). This thing is MASSIVE, looks gorgeous in HD though :). I'm kind of worried about the green goblin though, read up on that before buying.

Oh yeah, read about the "greenies". That's why I'm contemplating the XBR2 version - they're said to have resolved this issue with the XBR2's.

They supposedly resolved the issue with the A2000... until it cropped up 6 months after release... Then they supposedly resolved the issue with the later builds of the A2000... Now they supposedly fixed the issue with the XBR2s... Truth is, only time will tell; especially considering the XBR2 shares most of the optics with the A2000 from what I can tell (but has superior image processing).

I know what you're saying, but I haven't been able to find any negative instances with the XBR2's ... I know, I know ... YET.

If you have read so, links/refs would be mucho appreciated.
