i have toshiba satellite l40 with vista basic inside. i want to change to winxp,
when i insert the cd, after few minutes it says "harddisk driver not found", so installation cannot be continue. what can i do?

thanks.

WHat version of XP? Is it slipstreamed with SP2? If an old XP, and you have a SATA HDD, the driver may not be built in to your XP CD.

If you have Vista Home and it works, why change it?

If the laptop came with vista you'll first want to do some research. You gotta make sure you can find all the drivers the laptop will need to work with XP. If there are no XP drivers available for the hardware you won't be able to install XP. OK you'll be able to install it but the laptop won't work right. Check first then come back with additional questions.

Apparently this is a fairly common problem. Older versions of XP (pre-SP1) do not have SATA HDD drivers - it wasn't invented yet. So you need to download the drivers from Toshiba. Your L40 should have come with a CD. This may help:

L40

I would call Toshiba if all else fails.
