I'm having trouble with my brother's Hard Drive.
Quantum Fireball AS 30.0 GB 7200 RPM.

From what he tells me, he was working on his computer one moment, then went to sleep, then awoke to a blue screen. Computer would then lock up at bootup.

I've told him to do the following (in order):
1. Yank all unneccessary PCI cards to identify if the HD was in fact the problem.
2. Remove Hard Drive and hook it up to his roommate's slave (also setting the dipswitch to Slave) to identify if the HD was the problem amongst the remaining components.

Computer would still lock up after doing the first. In performing the second, his roommate's computer would then lock up on startup!

So I took his Hard Drive and tested it on my computer and my computer would lock up at startup also!

Any suggestions on the problem and solution would be great.

I would like to salvage some files too. -Thx

WinXP on all systems used.

Try the freezer trick and get a new hard drive. If it's a Quantum it's probably too old to RMA.

Dunno about your drive but I'm pretty sure drives don't have dipswitches, just jumpers ;)
