You should take a shovel to the previous owner's head and say "oh sorry, I thought you were possessed by the devil."

LOL... very good idea!

I second that.....hit her once for being cruel to the hamster, again for being so damn stupid and once more as a big hello from everyone at ATOT.

Hamsters can be quite timid, especially when they're young and some crazy bitch tries to hit it with a shovel. Just hearing your voice from outside the cage and seeing you each day, it'll come around and start to be more relaxed.

Hamsters generally like chewing stuff....anything from cardboard tubes (recommended) to the cable to your mouse (not recommended for several reasons). They do bite occasionally but the average hamster doesn't often draw blood, those little russian ones are maniacs though.

Ensure that the hamster has a wheel....and even more fun is a ball for them to run around the room....especially when your hamster has the knack of chasing the cat accross the room...which ours did...the cat used to try and get into the ball to no avail.

Hamsters love peanuts in the shell, good for their teeth....some of the barmy critters like to jam them whole into their cheek pouches...not sure exactly how good this is for them but it's a funny sight....like a human walking around with a bottle of coke in each cheek....picture it.....

Chocolate drops are good to get them to trust you....but not too many....make sure they work it all off in the wheel 😉 Also a small house type thing for them to sleep in, if you are in a cool dorm then it will very likely sleep in this, during warmer weather will likely sleep outside, often in a corner of the cage.

All this hamster talk is making me wanna get one 🙂 but they don't live that long and it's sad when they go 🙁

I have never heard of an 8 year old hamster. :Q

LOL....... No pets? Hamster? Hello?

I know people that have cats in no pets residences. 😛

I would hardly think the "no pets rule" applies to hamsters, fish, like someone above said. More like big ass dogs that go about shitting in the hall ways, and cats roaming about letting itself it other peoples dorm rooms when the window is open. Hamster in the other hand is very maintainable, so I say just keep it.

You should take a visit to the workshop class and get lots of sawdust, may as well and get it free instead of paying for it. Only thing you'll need to pay for is food, and that isn't really expensive. The hamster will probably come round in time after a frightening its experience, so just be gentle and you'll be fine.

keep the hamster. i doubt the no pets rule would apply to them really, unless whoever tries to enforce it is a real ass. im sure it applies more to cats, dogs, birds, noisy, big things...that need to get outdoors sometimes. Dont use sawdust from a woodshop, though. That would be way too fine and could clog up the little guy and possibly make him sick if its not the right kind of wood. Just go to a pet store and pick up a bag of hamster bedding, its little chips (not saw DUST) of pine or something usually. It doesnt cost much at all.

I dunno about getting sawdust from the shop...

What if the wood they've been cutting was treated with some chemical?

Stick to certified bedding material. It's really not that expensive.

Well, yes it does depends on the type of saw dust you get (but seriously, who in their right mind would put the big stuff in the hamsters cage), so you can still get the soft type of saw dust from workshop. My dad is a joiner and used to come home with bags of it when I was a kid, but if you're not sure about it then its probably best to buy it.

Bedding material? Never seen that in a hamsters cage before, and never heard of it being used before than using saw dust.

I seen this, so you are right about that (didn't know...):
Q: What do hamsters prefer for bedding?
A: There are a few different types of wood shavings marketed for hamsters, however not all of them are truly safe. Cedar shavings contain oils which can be irritating to the hamster's skin and should not be used. Instead, choose Aspen shavings for your furry friend. Also, there are nesting products on the market which can be hazardous to your hamster's health. Fluffy Bedding and Sleep Stuff are not recommended as these products can cause internal problems if ingested. Try using unscented paper tissue or a clean, cut-up piece of fabric.
