help going from laptop vga to tv (s-video or rca)

I cannot figure out how to make my laptop display on a screen. I have an ibm thinkpad 600x. I recently purchased a adapter cord (goes from vga to s-video and/or a vga rca composite) from ebay, that I cannot get to work (I pretty sure I'm hooking it up correctly). It looks like this one. I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to convert the standard old vga monitor output to a tv. I have used the monitor output to display on a monitor and it works just fine. Also, when I hooked up my new cord, I got it to display, but it was weird looking (it had three tall skinny desktops displayed in black and white, and you couldn't really see anything). Anyone got any advice or have done this before? Any help would totally rock! Thanks in advance!!

No, it has a spot where it would connect, but it is filled in with plastic. I don't understand why. The guy I bought it from (on at), said he had a cord that made it connect to a tv, then he forgot the cord and sent it to me later, but it doesn't have a place that it can connect to on the laptop. Anyways, I found this, but it doesn't seem quite worth that much trouble. I just want to buy something, and have it work. Is there any thing like a usb to tv or something? maybe that is a good idea? Thanks for the help?

To get a display on the TV you will need to purchase a scan converter such as you linked above.

If you search on eBay you can find one cheaper.

Just pay attention on the specs of the converter. Many only support 800x600 resolution. So you'll be stuck at 800x600 while using the device.
