which model receiver and TV do you have?
is the TV the 47LW5300?
So I take it you can't connect the wii u directly to the receiver? is the receiver out of HDMI ports?
If the receiver is out of hdmi ports, I take it you don't feel like swapping HDMI cables around all the time?
If you don't mind going <1080p and with stereo sound, you can use the component cables.
Optical audio out is the next easiest solution, is there something wrong with that setup?

Is the problem that you're only getting stereo sound?
You probably won't get surround through optical, since optical is limited to stereo unless your source encodes dolby digital which apparently the Wii U can't do (your TV almost certainly won't do it).
If stereo audio is your problem
Other than the: buy a new receiver with more HDMI inputs option
If you have a PS3, Xbox 360, Roku box or some other device that can output dolby digital encoded audio (and allows HDMI video and optical audio), you might want to have it swap places with the Wii U, and connect optical audio out directly from the device to the receiver. This will probably decrease sound quality on that specific device (dolby encoding vs LPCM) but allow all devices to output surround audio.
or
you could try an active HDMI switch

This should allow you to plug multiple HDMI sources into a single HDMI port on your receiver.
Varying options for these based on how sophisticated you want them.
