HELP! Getting PS2 to play DVD's widescreen

I have a PS2 hooked up to my 4:3 nonwidescreen HDTV via progressive output.
The PS2 thinks I have a widescreen (16:9) TV and the option to change that setting is greyed out even if I stop the DVD. I've tried all the settings in the PS2 configuration itself and nothing has changed (4:3, Full, 16:9) I dunno why the DVD software in the PS2 is thinking my TV is a widescreen! As a result..my anamorphic widescreen DVDs are looking all unproportional as it is stretched vertically to fit the screen..

HELP!

Are you stopping the dvd or just pausing it? You should be able to change the screen size in the dvd menu when you stop it, but not when its paused.

If you have the $$ for a High Def tv then you really should go out and buy a dedicated progressive scan DVD player. The PS2 isn't going to give you the best picture.

Yep, PS2's DVD playback is garbage even when compared to $100 dvd players. Unless you have the DVD remote, getting around the settings/menus is a pain with the controller.
