help getting older pc game to work

i have drakan: order of the flame, i cant get the game itself to run, the intro plays, i can select new game but after i select difficulty it immediatly goes back to desktop, it lets me view credits but thats about it.

my pc is rather high end and likely its not co operating with the newer direct x maybe or 7900gtx drivers...any way i can get this to play?
 
I assume you've tried running in W95/98 compatiblity mode?

If that didn't help, no sure what else you can do except Google to see if anyone else discussed the problem.
