Hi guys, I've been reading on the forums for a little while now and just finally registered. In either case, Here's my current task that I'm doing. I have 3 pc's that I need to be networked together. I've networked them the old fashioned way (2 nics in my server - one my cable modem and the other going to my hub) but I want to use Win2k's new feature where you can assign 2 ip's to 1 nic. Here's where I got so far;

Here is a diagram of it;

.Modem ---Xcable--|
..................|
..................| Hope you guys can see this
..............--HUB-- It wouldn't let me put so many
..............|..|..| spaces in
..............|..|..|
....-----------..|...--------
....|............|...........|
....|............|...........|
....|............|...........|
.Server........ PC 2........PC 3
.24.x.x.x````192.168.0.2```192.168.0.3
.192.168.0.1

I have a crossover cable going from my Cable modem into my HUB (Yes my hub is set so it knows it's a X cable)

I then have 3 straight through cables going into each of my pc's (including my win2k pro pc that will act as my server)

Ok, now that you guys know the hardware setup, here's how I have my IP set as (Keep in mind I have 1 nic in each of these pcs)

---
On My Server -
I set up my ip, gateway, and dns settings exactly as @home says (I have a static IP assigned). Then I tested the connection to make sure that my server was online, it was and everything worked.

Now it's time to set up my LAN - -

I went back into my nic properties of my server and added another IP address 192.168.0.1 with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Ok, now I set up my other PC's as IP's 192.168.0.2(3) with the subnet 255.255.255.0

Here's the wierd part, I can run a proxy server (Analog proxy) and have my 2nd pc pointing to my server (Ie options have it pointing to 192.168.0.1) and I can get on the internet with no problem. BUT when I go to "computers near me" nothing comes up and when I try to do a \\Computername and try to connect to it that way I still can't connect. But the wierdest part is that even though I can get out to the internet from my 2nd PC, I can't ping my server...very odd. Can someone that has gotten the 2ips on 1 nic work please shed some light on the subject for me? Or hell, try it out yourselves and let me know what you came up with :)

I do not want to run a Domain so I'm doing all this through a Workgroup

Please don't tell me to use 2 nics because I have done that already and it worked, I'm trying to learn this new feature of Win2k (being able to assign 2 ips to 1 nic):confused:

One problem I see is that by your config, you are exposing your local lan to the Net. I'm not sure what the collision factors would be (You have your IPs connected to your hub, which is directly connected to your modem). And it seems like you might have your traffic echoing back to the lan, albeit on a different NIC, but still, not sure what all the factors would be like.

Well, I'm not really opening it up because I'm giving access rights only to my logins for each PC, so that is not really concerning me. I just want the thing to work correctly so I can use different drives on different pc's :)

Look guys, that's not the issue here, I'm just experimenting to see if this is possible and how. Windows 2000 has a new feature that will allow you to assign 2 ips for 1 nic, I'm just trying to set up a traditional LAN without actually using 2 nics, do you guys understand? I know this is possible because a friend did it with a win98 machine and I'm just trying it with a win2k one. Please bear in mind that the IS a new feature and a lot of the traditional networking guys say it won't work, but it does. Just trying to set it up in win2k is a pain :) All help is greatly appreciated. If you don't have any response that will help me in this endevour, please do not reply, thanks

Cable modem to one of the server NICs, and its other NIC to the hub. Then ICS or other sharing software will share the cable connection with the other computers you connect to the hub.

Just off the top of my head I would say that your proxy has the two IP addy turned around. Make sure the external and internal IP listed in the program are the correct ones. Pull up your routing table (open a dos box and type route print|more) and look at the 0.0.0.0 line. The interface should be the external addy.

Obenton, thanks for the advice but like I said;

"Please don't tell me to use 2 nics because I have done that already and it worked, I'm trying to learn this new feature of Win2k (being able to assign 2 ips to 1 nic)"

To get two IP addresses on one NIC go into tcp/ip settings and click on the Advanced button. That page allows you to enter additional IP addresses, gateways (metrics must be different), etc. for the NIC. Restrictions are that no two addresses can be on the same subnet, and, I believe, all addresses must be static (no DHCP included).
