Set up iTunes, import the movies into iTunes then sync them to the iPad.

iTunes has its own built in re encoder I believe, but it's slow. I bought Wondershares all in one encoder for the Mac. Re encodes everythIng to various apple device formats. I use it almost every day. Rips DVD's too, even the ones dvdfab won't. Audio conversion as well.

I use Cyberlink Media Espresso on Windows. You have to pay for it but it's GPGPU based and considerably more user friendly than AMD's built in VIVO Encoder. Depending on your GPU, it can be considerably faster than Handbrake while doing as good a job.

The best free alternative is Handbrake bar none. It's unfortunate VLC for iPad flopped. FlexPlayer is the new play-it-all alternative. Haven't tried it yet though but it looks solid.

AVPlayerHD will play any movie file (mostly).

so are you saying that we should download AVplayer HD app on our ipads?

please be more clear, and even if we do, how do i get my movies recognized by itunes....everytime i try to drag any movies to the movie section in ipad... it shows a red circle with a cross icon and does not accept it

If your movies aren't in a native iTunes format, you're either going to have to re-encode or use an app like AVPlayerHD. With it, you won't have to connect it to iTunes, it allows you to transfer movies over wifi. It does not however do music playing.

The way I do it.

Jailbreak your iPad, transfer the files as they are from your pc/mac via FTP, open in VLC on the ipda. Voila. Zero cost, and once setup, takes only the time of the transfer (3-4mb/sec). He wont be able to play 1080p content though.

If its not Jailbroken and you are not familiar, this can be tricky. If you are interested in pursuing this route I'd be happy to help out.

Is the jailbroken VLC version updated?

God it would be so much easier just to load the movies onto a SD card and simply plug the card in the slot on the side of the iPad and play them! Oh, oh, ohhh that's right there is no frickin slot on the side of the iPad is there?? Ha HA HAAA what a sick joke. I swear the iPad is a test to see how truly stupid people are. What other way is there to explain it? Really it is 2012 and you cant just stick a card in the slot and play a movie??? Smoke what??? A laptop on craigslist for $42 can do it... but apparently people love feedign the bloated beast so much that none of this matters.

Well if you think about it, where did those movies that can be loaded onto an SD card come from?

For most of the people using an iPad, they are in the Apple ecosystem, which means they use the iTunes Movie Store so they already have access to those movies and can view them on the iPad.

In honesty, I haven't done it in a few months. I would have to dig it out this weekend and check. I got it from the Cydia store when VLC was not allowed into the Appstore.

I saw no problem with VLC though, and I've seen hours of of material in different encodings and formats.

If I use the ipad, I use it to Netflix or to stream from my HTPC. There is a nifty little app, say $3-5, which does that very well. I don't have the name ready....

For keeping them locally, converting with Handbrake (which you would probably want to do anyway for space purposes) and then loading them via AVPlayerHD is a good way to go. I use AirVideo on my home network, which just streams any video to the iPad (and uses the host system to live-convert the files). I can then push them to my AppleTV via AirPlay.

Plus any movies that I have either purchased or redeemed through iTunes can be streamed or downloaded to the iPad directly.

Step 1: Buzz Played HD from the appstore
Step 2: Done!

Buzz player is great, will play anything and you can move the files to you ipad from within the app over wifi

Keep in mind you'll get less battery life using third party video players as they decode the movies with the CPU instead of the GPU.

You sure about the battery life thing? I can watch an hour long 1080 MKV and battery goes down by about 5% - 9%

You think the GPU sucks less power than the CPU? I would imagine the difference would be fairly minimal compared to the drain from the screen for example.

I have watched 9 hours almost solid video using Buzz on a flight to china recently ... still had close to 20% battery left.

OFF TOPIC: I just discovered Plex for iPad which combined with the plex server on my DS1512 NAS is absolutley f*******g amazing!

Yeah I'm pretty sure, the GPUs support hardware acceleration -- they're in a very low power state when decoding video, the CPU on the other hand ends up getting high usage which just kills the battery. May not be as noticeable on the iPad 3 considering the amount of power the display draws.

It's also possible that the MP4 in the MKV is being decoded by the GPU because it's a supported format which would explain why your battery life was fine.
