Help getting firewire port to work right.

Me and my friends are trying to make a movie with adobe premier, but we cant get the footage uploaded from the camera. We have an Ieee firewire cable hooked up to the camera but it tells us the device is not ready whenever we try to do anything. Is there something we have to setup, either on the camera or on the computer? Any help will be appreciated.

I believe that you must have some software installed for the direct hookup. Is the Firewire port AOK in Device Manager? Also, the camera must ne "on" for any connection to be made. What you need to do is isolate the fault - which device is not ready? The camera or the Firewire port/controller?

When connecting a camera windows XP displays an icon of a video cam in the system tray, you have that?

EDIT: No software needed for a DV capture device, standard drivers are included on all Windows except Win98 first ed.
