I have a gateway essential on the bench right now, story is - Fiances brother was in another town and found a computer in a dumpster, brought it home and popped the hard drive from it into his PC, nothing happened, so he removed the other hard drive and then rebooted (using his hard drive) He then got an error about a corrupt .vxd (virtual driver). I tried replacing the file, no luck, tried the restore (Windows ME....YUCK!) didnt work, reformatted it and did restore, still no luck. Did a low level format and then restore (no luck) did a low level then tried a normal OS. STILL NOT WORKING! Tried a new hard drive (no luck) tried new ram (no luck), new ram + new hard drive (no luck)
So where I'm at now is... Have all his components back in place, did a restore and actually got into windows, then it crashed. Now whenever you do anything, whether its in the process of a low level format, reinstall or whatever the case, it works for a bit and then the screen goes blank except for some white bars at the very top.
Its a gateway essential mATX 866
