Hey guys-
Need some help. My friend has a Gateway Athon 850, just got it last year. The thing is this heap of junk been locking up since day one. His warrenty is up so he's not getting any help from gateway. The time they tried to fix it, they didn't. This thing will lock up for no reason. I'm not running any graphic intensive games or anything. It'll just lock up when i open a file. Sometimes I can run the comp for a couple of hours sometimes only mins. This thing will lock up for no reason. Supposely gateway has replaced everything but the HD and it's still doing this. I'm running out of ideas on what to do. I have done the following to try to figure this out:
-Reformatted and did a clean install of Windows ME.
-Replaced the graphics card with known stable and cool running card.
-Took out the SB Live sound card.
-Ran defrag, scan disk and Nortons Util.
-Scan for virus.
-Checked all the wiring.
Like I said I've tried everything I can think of. The only thing I've notice about the comp was that the orignal grap card ran SUPER HOT, The power supply was below what was recommanded, according to one my frieds, the power in the comp is 200w and I heard it should be at least 300w. I can't check the volt setting, cause it's a cheap mobo and it's not in the bios. And the cooling the system is really weird, it has big heatsink with a BIG fan that vents on the side of the comp, the fan sits on the side of the heatsink.
Please if anyone can help, i've worked on this thing for about two weeks and i'm running out of ideas.
