Help, games crash when i alt-tab

for example, whenever i play quake, and i alt-tab back into windows, it says "quake has generated errors and an error log has been created".

i'm running win2k pro with sp2. any ideas what's going on?
 
it works fine in all of my games (deus ex, max payne, half life, yada). keep an app running tha ttakes up no resources..i made a vb app tha tjust sits there..so you can alt+tab to that.
