I am building a system mainly for web surfing and normal home use. (editing photos, quicken, burning cd/dvds, etc.) Very light game play, nothing more intense than probably WOW. I am looking for a budget atx cpu/mobo somewhere around the $150 range, it should include good onboard sound. I know this isnt much but i have found semprons and even some p4s in this range. I will also be adding probably a vid card like a 5500 or something with dvi and tv out. The rest of the system will outlast the mobo/cpu and I will replace it within 2 years with something better. But for now can someone offer their suggestions for this budget minded build.

My other components that I have already purchased:
atx tower
450w ps
200 gig maxtor
lite-on dvd drive
lite on dvd burner
multi card reader w/floppy
windows xp home
dell 17" lcd

Thanks

no no no, dont' get a socket A cpu. They are old technology, and you'll just be wasting money over it. I have a sempron 3100+ and a socket 754 mobo. It just cost me around 150 +/- and it worked fine perfectly.

You can check the sig below :) for the scores I pumped out from my rig (3100+ @ 2.069 Ghz)

Save a little more for an A64 socket 939. Buying anything less right now will just be a waste of money. I got my mobo, proc, and memory for somewhere around 300 from Newegg, and I expect it to last well into the future (relatively speaking). That's my advice, just save up a little more and get what you really want instead of wasting money on a celery or sat-upon (celeron or sempron) processor, then have to start saving all over again to get something good.

Hopefully you should consider that the OP already claimed that he has a $ 150 budget limit. The sock. 754 has some life left, there's no need to worry about that yet. I'm using it =)

Heres the thing. I dont run graphic intensive games. for what i do this socket 754 will last me 2 years. I dont mind if im "throwing away 150" as u say for 2 years worth of use. Theres no guarantee that 2 years from now socket 939 isnt going to be in the same shape as 754 now. The whole idea for me building my own computer was i could use some older technology and save a bundle while building a system that works for me. The reason the budget is tight is i have just invested in a lcd monitor, case, ps, dvd drive, dvd burner, media drive, and still have to pick up video card and hard drive. Now in 2 years when i want to upgrde the only thing then i have to spend is for a new mobo/processor as all other components will be fine. So then if I have to dish out 500 its not a big deal.

Trust me on this one...sempron 3100+ wont disappoint you. The sig below is my first rig, but before all the upgrades. It cost me 500 $ to built with just

3100 : $ 113
biostar mobo : $ 56
2 x 512 mb ram : $ 72
6600 vid card : $ 139
80gb hdd : $ 61
30 $ case w/ psu
29 $ cd-rw

worked fine and dandy :)

Didn't mean to make anyone mad, just stating my personal opinion and offering a sincere recommendation. If a Sempron will keep you happy for two years, more power to you, but for me, it just wouldn't cut it. And of course 939 will be phased out in two years, nobody's expecting it to outlive socket A or anything!

Alright settled somewhere in the middle. Think this should work real well with what I do for awhile.

Here is what I got:

Gigabyte GA-K8N-Pro nForce 3 150 Chipset MB with CD

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU with Heatsink and Thermaltake Fan

This is socket 754 but it should do. Got this for 165 shipped.

Now need advice on a vid card with both dvi and s-vid. Remember nothing too graphic intensive on games. Although it would be nice to play a few games now and then. But im not a fps kind of guy so i dont know, maybe some racing games? want to spend about 75, not afraid to buy used from forums. Also advice on 2x512 ram for this mobo. I dont overclock so dont think i need anything fancy (read value here or cheap if you prefer).

Thanks for any suggestions
