Hi,

I am building an AMD system for my friend and i dont know where to start. He already has a 1700+ athlon and he wants it Overclocked.
What are the best components (Case, PSU, Motherboard, Memory only!!!) that any website could offer that would lead to the highest chance of a succesful and fruitful OC. HE WANTS IT CHEAP!

So far i have..

motherboard: Shuttle nForce2, or Asus A7V8X (KT400)

memory: kingston hyperX 512mb PC2700

case: Xoxide X-viper

PSU: some generic brand 400watt ($30) offered by Xoxide

Also, whats a good, nice and cheap overclocking HSF for that processor??

THANKS ALOT YOU PPLS! :D

dfi NF2 lanparty
2x 512mb mushkin pc3500
2500+ barton

a bit expensive but i wanted good stuff

yeah, nforce2 all the way. Also make sure the PSU has enough wattage on the 12v rail.

omg.. my friend wants the $30 Fry's Electronics generic PC2700 RAM...

do you think i could just lower the memory ratio and continue the OC?

with most any of the nforce2 ultra boards out there you'll easily hit over 220mhz assuming all other components are good and the chips aren't holding it back
the kt400 has trouble even hiting anything over 200

make sure you get good memory and most any t-bred or barton would be a good purchase for oc'n these days

mobo: epox 8rda+ is dirt cheap... go for it instead

memory: crucial pc3200 is good stuff i think...

psu: don't use anything generic.. try the antec 380W or check out anand's review of all the psu's he did...

there's some good cheap ones in there that are worth getting!

i was checking out newegg and the slk800 is WAY too expensive. Is there another HSF out there than can give good performance under moderate OC conditions thats cheap? (1700+ Athlon XP)

i had a friend who used one called the chiller i think off of xoxide but with and 80mm fan instread of a 60 and was very happy with that. it won't do for any extreme ocing but if you are looking to get the 1700 to 1.8 it should be fine but with that one don't go above 2.0 or it wil prolly overheat.

You don't have to do anything to unlock it if you get an nforce2 board. They all unlock it for you.

Not all boards unlock all multipliers... the Asus A7N8X only unlocks 12.5 and below... which isn't a problem unless you don't have PC3200 RAM and have to run a 166 Mhz FSB with a higher multiplier to get the 2.2 Ghz that Bartons and T-Bred B's are almost guaranteed to reach.

I am not very educated on the revisions and the "t-bred" models of certain Athlons. He has a 1700+ rated Athlon that is GREEN. I've seen most AMD chips to be YELLOW so what does that mean? It was purchased a year ago. Also, so its almost guarenteed to hit 2.2ghz? Would the SLK7 handle that speed and what voltage should the chip be able to take?
