Help for a Networking Newbie - Home Network

I am very experienced with maintaining computers, as I've basically run the various computer labs here at school. This has included repairing them, software installation/updates, compatability issues, etc. However, I've little experience with networking beyond adding computers to a domain, configuring TCP/IP, etc. I would like to set up a home network WITH A DOMAIN for next semester, to gain some hands on experience. I've got a few computers lying around which I could use. Please offer your suggestions not only on what I could do with them (especially the OS and their function in the network) and what a few good sites or a book would be to look at for suggestions. Maybe a linux based firewall with the Compaq, and then the P4 a domain controller? Or can I set up a domain Controller with the PII 350? I have access to Win2k Advanced Server, also the latest version of Redhat, and then Win98 and Win2k. I would, however, be every open to setting up another version of linux, but I'd really like to get some experience with Win2k Adv. Server, so If that was the domain controller OS, it would be great. Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

Computers Available:

Dell P4 w/ 256 Megs of SDRAM (I know, I need to get a better PC)
40 GB HDD
GeForce2 MX 400 w/ TV Out

Compaq P166 w/ 32 mb of EDO Ram
2 Gig HDD
Built in Network Card
Floppy, CD, etc.

Generic PII 266 w/ 128 megs of ram
20 GB HDD
TNT 2
Generic Network Card
Floppy, CD, etc.

Generic PII 350 w/ 384 megs of ram
20 GB HDD
Matrox G450 Graphics Card
Generic Network Card
Floppy, CD, etc.

Thanks!
Tim

O.K. try this.

Linux on the Compaq as a firewall with Redhat, or BSD if you fell like having fun.
The Generic P350 as the domain controller with 2k advance server.
The old Generic 266 as a 98 client and the P4 as and xp client.

That would be a pretty basic and diverse netowrk setup.

Then once you get that working and understand the ends and outs. Think about taking the firewall box and making it a 98 client, and turning the P266 into a Redhat box running as another Domain controler along side windows 2k advance. That should give you a good grasp of networking.

BTW. If 2k advance id running slow on the P350 switch it and the P4's roles. I just like the fact that the P350 had more ram, and servers always love ram. Also set up roaming profiles, thats a good experience.

If you have any questons just PM me.

Thanks a lot, jonmullen. Thats pretty much the setup I had planned, but I hadn't thought of switching the roles later. Also, using win98 on the PII 266 is a very good idea. I won't be able to set this up for another couple weeks, but will remember your name when I get around to it. Have a good holiday!
