My friend graduated early from high school and took a long vacation. He just got back from it. He hasn't applied to any colleges yet. His ACT was a 20, highest math Algebra 2, A's and B's in math/science, non-honors.

He wants to do some sort of engineering (biomedical or computer).

He was about to apply to a DeVry "engineering technology" program thinking it was engineering, but I explained to him that it isn't what he thought it was.

There is a 2 year program at our local community college (Harper College) that offers pre-engineering courses, and then an option to transfer to a bigger university after the 2 years.

He doesn't have a large wallet, and wants to stay in Illinois. He's in the Northwest Suburbs in the Chicago area (Schaumburg). Harper College is really close to us.

Should he do this program, or apply to a few other more selective colleges? If so, what colleges?

Thanks all

Doing the community college then transferring is a great idea, it saves a ton of money, and his degree will come from the university, so it's a win win situation.

Start out at the community college. And work his way up from there. He won't get into any of the selective schools with those credentials (Algebra 2??, Non-honors) He may have to work his way up from the CC.

I don't think that you can get into a selective college with an ACT of 20 unless you're an athlete. Maybe something has changed with the ACT recently?
