I'm trying to install Zone Alarm Pro (newest version) on my main box. It's dual homed (one NIC is DHCP to cable provider the other is static 192.168.0.1 set by ICS) and is the ICS gateway for my home LAN. I've got my SetiQ box on this network and every time I try configing Zone Alarm as the ICS gateway it locks up my box (total lockup - not just ZA crashing) when my SetiQ tries to connect through it. Right now I dumped ZA and it's working fine but I don't want to leave my primary box exposed to the 'net like this.

Any ideas? I've tried setting the security to "Low" and opening all outgoing ports. Doing that my SetiQ box still can't connect anyway. As soon as I tell ZA it's the ICS gateway it freezes hard.

Thanks...

Are you using dial up? If so you really dont need the ZA.

Ive never used ZA. I do know there is a killer deal at Best Buy on a DI-704 router/gateway ~$10 after rebates. I picked one up last week. 59.99 -20MIR-30MIR. Should work fine if you want to access the net through your other comps in the house. Installation was a snap as soon as I figured all the ports were blocked by default.

Beats the heck out of trying to get ZA to work.

I have heard black ice to be a very good security program.

i had all number of problems with the latest version of ZAP (2.6.362), it kept locking up my WinXP machine as well.

i have gone back to ZAP 2.6.357, and i have had no problems with that.

LMK if you need the setup file for 357 :)

i set up my old 233 with Win2k yesterday as an ICS machine and SetiQ, PM me or post back here if you want any of my fairly limited help!

Jwyatt: I'm on cable and my system runs 24/7/365 (of course!) so I really want to have something between it and the 'net. I had a Linksys 4-port router but after nearly 2 years of service I ran into DNS problems with it recently. I had to reboot my primary system several times per day. I tried 3 NIC's and fresh loads of WinXP and Win2K before I got rid of the Linksys. I just checked a few reviews of that DLink unit and they seemed very positive. I like the Lifetime Warranty as well. I've already got to return a headset phone to Best Buy so it looks like I know what I'm going to be doing with the credit.

ConfusedBW: You've got PM. :D

Thanks guys!

Jwyatt: Where's that Best Buy deal? Is it in store (B&M) only? There's no mention on their website.

Robor,
I have cable with ICS.
I have two nics in my Athlon 700, one goes to the cable modem and one for ICS goes to my hub and the rest of my nework.
I use Zone Alarm.
I'm not sure what your question is but I do recall that I had to set up everthing else first and then set up Zone Alarm or it would not work.
My 700 has both medium settings and any other computers on the network have medium settings for local and high for the internet.
I hope this helps.

EDIT: I have WIN 98 SE and the free version of Zone Alarm.

The same as Curt Oien : Using Win2K pro with 2 nics (One connected to the Adsl modem, one to the local network hub). I have set up all (SETIQueue, SETI@home, ICS, VNC) before installing ZA. It runs like a charm... :)
BTW, I'm using the free version not the pro one.

PM or email me if you want details.

Mine was setup the same way. Dual homed primary system - 1 NIC to the cablemodem the other to a hub with the rest of my machines. All the machines can "see" each other and all can ping stuff on the 'net through my ICS gateway. However, as soon as I install ZA they can't see anything outside the internal LAN. That makes sense as ZA is preventing them so I tell ZA it's an ICS gateway and BAM - solid lockup as soon any any internal machine tries to access the 'net through it. I'm going to Best Buy later (sidenote - do NOT buy the IBM 2.4 Ghz cordless headset. It's a POS) and I'm going to check for that D-Link router deal.

Doesn't windows XP have a built-in firewall? How does it compare to ZAP? I use cable with a Linksys router and have no plans on getting XP soon, but it would be nice to know how the firewall works.
