Help! Finding Misc. Hardware

Just purchased an E8400 and an Enzotech Ultra-X. I also purchased one of the new Scythe "Ultra Kaze" 120 x 38mm fans (3000 rpm 133.6 CFM!) to mount on it for that extra kick. It apears that most stock 120mm fans are 25.4mm thick, and i was aware i'd need some new bolts when i ordered. After explaining to a home depot employee that most computer mounting hardware is metric, and looking for a standard alternative, i'm SOL. Need a 4mm x 40-45mm bolt/screw that will mount the bigger fan into the top of the Ultra-X. Anyone out there have a newegg of the misc. computer hardware world or any ideas i'd be much obliged.

Your local Home Depot or Lowes has a good small hardware selection with many specialty types and metric. I have a lumber yard and a hardware store that both carry some metric and my town is less than 2000 pop. And any TrueValue or Ace hardware affiliate should have some stock that they sell in onesies. These stores generally have thread gauges so you can determine the thread and diameter of the items you are trying to match or at least an assortment of nuts you can match it to. A lot of screws that come with HSFs, fan adapters, etc. are not metric, they are English like number 4 or 6-32. Metric generally has finer threads than English/American sizes. Good luck. McMaster-Carr www.mcmaster.com has about any type of screw, nut, what have you under the sun, but you'll likely have to buy many more of each size than you need, always best to try locally for onesies/twosies if possible.

And there are really no american equivalents to metric - they will either be a bit too small or a bit too big. The Ultra Kaze has open corners so you could use the 25mm fan screws that came with it thru the bottom ears of the fan (shim out with washers or tubular spacers if necessary) and mount the guard into the holes in the top ears with standard fan screws. Always a work-around if the old gray matter is functioning adequately.

The old gray matter is functioning on par, although with age it slows down from time to time 😕 The guy at home depot new his stuff but unfortunately what i need is not a common item, i'm out of luck at home depot in this area (a million + people in my county alone) as they all carry the same inventory. The main problem with the Ultra-x is that it's threaded specifically for these size screws on the top four corners, and i don't want to bore them out or make any modifications to the heatsink itself. The screws i ordered a 4mm x.7 x 45mm and with the fan grill it looks like they should be just about right. Appreciate the help,

That's why I said you could use the inch or so long screws that came with the sink, but put them only thru the bottom ears of the fan to hold the Scythe onto the heatsink and hold the guard to the fan with a set of standard fan screws. No extra screws to find or buy - and no mods to the heatsink at all, just some washers or tubular spacers to space the heatsink screws out properly that can be had anywhere. But I see you aren't getting the picture.

I'm doing stuff like that all the time because I like fat fans too. It's getting very late here, so I'll take some pix later this morning (probably closer to Noon eastern) to illustrate it for you.

I understand what you're saying perfectly Bill, no need to be snide 😉 I've already tried getting the screws through the bottom ears only and they seem to be just a tad to long to squeeze in. I could file them or even use a hacksaw to take a small portion of them off as long as i don't ruin the thread, and then use spacers/washers to make sure it's a snug and secure fit.
 
Well hell, used a little extra force and i finally got them in the bottom ears, thanks bill. Now all i need are some washers.
