Help finding a College to Attend

I'm in my senior year and I need to pick some colleges to apply to. I'm mostly looking for east coast schoolsand I have a about a 4.5 weighted gpa (about 3.3 unweighted), 1200 on the SAT's (taking again in the fall), and am taking/have taken all honors/ap classes. I have played soccer all 4 years but that about sums up my school involvement. I was wondering what colleges I have a chance of getting into that are good in the Comp. Engineering field (plan on majoring in comp. engineering). I've looked around but can't really figure out what schools are good and which only claim to be good. I'll appreciate any help i can get.

4.5 weighted/3.3 unweighted GPA? Is that even possible?

Man, back when I was in high school, it wasn't even possible to get a 4.5. Now it seems as if everyone gets a 4.3+.

For your major MIT and Carnegie Mellon are best. Buy I would come out west and attend UCLA.🙂 Beaches bitches and booze oh my.

How can you have a 4.5 weighted GPA and have a 3.3 unweighted GPA? Even if you weighted every class, the highest you could get would only be a 4.3.

Unless of course high school has changed.

It's weighted 4.5 because at my school (don't know how it works at others), ap classes count as 5.5 for and A while honors count as a 5 for an A. I had 3 A's and 4 B's, one of the A's was for an AP class, the rest were for honors classes.

Being a Tech grad, I gotta do it too. 😀

Btw, which year did you graduate, or are you currently attending GT?

Good lord. An A should be 4.0 no matter what kind of class it is.

A 5.5?!?!?! Thats like what, 110? 115? Considering a 4.0 is 100 on almost every college conversion. Thats a ridiculous system your school has going on there IMHO. I really dont think you got 3 100s, especially one being an AP class (unless it was extremely easy). Maybe in the range from 90-97, but 3 100s in an AP and 2 Honors classes seems relatively tough to attain for most people.

Maybe look at Kettering University, RPI, RIT, Drexel University, Carnegie Mellon, MIT as a few examples. Try to get your SAT scores up to around 1400-1450 for a better shot at some of the more prestigious schools.

I know the system my school uses is probably different then what most people are used to, that's why I listed the unweighted gpa as well.

The US News report was awful this year. Many high-quality colleges and universities were ranked in third-tier and below based on arbitrary decisions by US News about what was important. You shouldn't rely on magazine reports to determine where to go to school.

Might want to look into Cornell perhaps. I'll also take this opportunity to slip in a reference to my university, the University at Buffalo 😉 (No, really, we do have a good engineering program here)

If you have anything resembling a life, I would not reccomend GAtech. Seriously.

How well does Virginia Techs Computer Engineering program rank? I know they have a very good engineering program in general, but how good is that department? I went there for a info session/presentation thing on their computer engineering program and I wasn't very impressed. It was weird because I've heard good things about the school and their engineering program but after the presentation I was like "wtf, she didn't tell me anything useful"

Have to agree with numark. My first choice (I'm applying this year as well) is Cornell and my father went to Buffalo and was fine (until the school closed down due to vietnam riots 🙂).

Tufts is also a very fine school to go, too, one that I think a lot of people looking at schools in the northeast overlook.

www.kettering.edu ! You cant beat their co-op program, but tuition is a biatch. If you decide to come here, look me up and and we can party in the apartments 🙂

BTW - Flint, MI IS on the east coast..... of michigan!

I went to a top 20 university (according to US News) and I don't think I got much more than someone that went to a 40th or 50th or whatever ranked school. I think you should use rankings as a guide, but not as the only source to pick a college. You should think of reputation, ranking, location, etc. when choosing where to go 🙂 Going to a prestigious school can help you, but not going to one isn't going to shut a whole lot of doors for you.
