Help, failed BIOS flash...

Completely? I know the chip can be reprogrammed, but I didn't want it to come to that.

Anyone have instructions on doing the board chip swap & flash trick?

i believe i read something like that a long time ago. so, like i said in your GH thread, it's most likely google-able.

If you can remove the chip safely, Asus will flash it for $5. If you call them up, you can mail them the bios chip along with a note telling them what board it is for, along with a $5 check to cover the cost of return postage. They will flash it and return it.

The hot swap trick usually requires a board of the same type...

Is that the consensus? THat I need a board of the same type? 🙁 Well, I guess I can deal w/ that.

Do you have an address / link to address where I'd send it?
 
When I fubared my K7S5A, there was a way to recovering the BIOS and reflashing it. This probably won't help, but I was able to recover using these directions (I found this on Google):

"If you are a little lucky, the "bootblock" code in the BIOS still works. This will allow you to flash your BIOS even though you computer seems dead. Format a blank floppy (on another computer, of course), and put the .rom file on it, and nothing else. Now rename the .rom file to this name: "amiboot.rom". Put the disk in the dead machine and turn it on. Wait for a couple of minutes (now would be a good time for a little prayer) and listen for four beeps. If you hear them, the bios on the floppy has been flashed onto your BIOS chip. Turn the computer off and on again, and it should work again."
 
You need a the same working MB and eprom puller to a hotswap. There are shops in Vegas that can reprogram it and usualy charge around 30$.

I had this happen on my old Epox 8KHA. It would still try an load a floppy, even thought the keyboard, monitor, etc. werent working. So I just made a floppy with the flash program & the old BIOS then set it to run in the autoexec.bat. It worked fine.
 
yeah I managed to flash the bios on an ecs (not k7s5a) board that I thought was FUBAR. Saved me $100, so I was happy. It had just enough functionality to boot a floppy and flash the bios.
 
I'll try putting the AWDflash and the rom on a floppy, but I seem to be getting no life from it...well, I can't try until midday anyway (at work)
