Help explain this to me

So I'm thinking about going back to college next week and all the stuff I will be bringing up with me: desktop computer, keyboard and mouse, 19" LCD, laptop, 5.1 sound system, all my games, external HDD, etc. This is all stuff I brought home just for Christmas break.

Then I see practically every other college student, and what do they bring? Their laptop, bookbag, some clothes, that's about it. Now granted, it makes sense, these kids just don't like computer games and surround sound like I do. But doesn't it seem weird that I practically need these things to be happy and will go to such things lengths to haul them back and forth between school and home? I mean, if all the other kids are happy without those things, shouldn't I be, as well? Really, what do other kids DO for fun in their spare personal time?

Oh well, just made me think.

Just did last night! Thanks.

Doesn't mean I don't think about weird things when I'm bored! 😛

I meant the other.

And that wasn't my point anyway. I am no daredevil.

My point is that you don't need to be worrying about stuff. Just go with the flow -- it is college and the most fun is something that gets done with spontaneity.

You probably put too much emphasis on needing "things" to make you happy. Electronic gadgetry isn't everything.

Exactly. When I brought a big honkin' computer to school I thought I was happy being a loner nerd. Then I realized that I might as well have just commuted to school and saved the money because I wasn't doing anything in my dorm besides playing CS... not meeting people, not going out... not having fun.

Stop being a damn nerd or you're doomed to a life of being lonely and boring.

Well it's late, but...

I am trying to worry less nowadays.

Gadegtry ISN'T everything, and I don't rely on them for my happiness. But they do provide a lot of fun and I don't like feeling "stripped" of things that make me feel normal while I'm at school.

Injury, that is exactly what I did last semester, and I did that because I had a girlfriend and so I felt no need to really extend myself socially. Now that I'm single I AM commiting to a change! However that doesn't mean I shouldn't have my games and music to enjoy.

Yossarian, really? I dunno. I had the same thoughts as you and that's why I didn't bring them last semester. Then I found myself really missing them and decided it was stupid to leave behind something I enjoy. I mean everyone has their favorites pasttimes, right?

Well, even if you ARE dedicated to being the geeky recluse on campus, you can certainly trim this stuff down:

[*]desktop computer
I'm assuming you've considered going the SFF route? A HELL of a lot smaller and easier to move than a desktop/tower, and just as powerful. Heck - there are even SLI models available!

[*]19" LCD
Just use a 17"! Same exact resolution, it's just smaller and lighter!

[*]Laptop
Wait, you brought a desktop system AND a laptop? WTF? *WHY*??

[*]5.1 sound system
Now, THIS is just lunacy. You realize with a *good* pair of headphones (Sennheisers, for example), you actually get *better* positional audio than with 5.1 speakers, right (at least, with a 'gaming' soundcard like an X-Fi that has CMSS)? 5.1 speakers can't simulate sounds 'above' or 'below' you, while headphones can. Surround sound speakers are only useful when you want to try and approximate the sound field headphones can give you, but in a group setting so that more than one person could enjoy it. If you are only doing it on your own in the dorm....speakers make no sense at all!

[*]All (your) games
Why? Aren't they already installed to the hard drive? Why do you need to bring anything with you, then?

[*]External HDD
Again - why? For moving even very large projects back and forth from various sites, USB thumb drives on your keychain make a much better solution. For one, you don't have to worry about USB and power cables running all over the place, the bulky drive frame, etc. For another, you never have to worry about forgetting it somehow - it's always right there, on your keychain. And, of course, it's smaller and easier to use!
