Help! Ethernet speeds are too slow, and Need a program to remote control my server.

Hi all, thanks for taking to time to help me

My setup is comprised of 2 PC's 1) Pentium 133 Mhz with Amd PCnet II 10BaseT Ethernetcard, running Winroute Pro, and acting as my 56K dialup computer. 2) P3 1GHz with Linksys LNE100TX.

They are connected by a Cat5 crossover cable. And are using only Tcp/Ip protocol and Microsoft File and printer sharing.

The problems i am having are slow file transfers from 1 pc to the other. On Microsoft's system monitor it reports max speeds of 562KBps when I transfer 1gig of data from HD, (PC to PC). I know the theorectical limit is 1.2MBps. But i am no where near this mark. So my questions are:

1.) How can i speed up my network? (short of buying new hardware)

2.) I also need a program so i can control my dialup server. Something like PCanywhere, or microsoft Netmeeting. A free program is best buy i will consider retail programs.

Take a look at VNC for a remote control package.

The problem is likely to be the 133 computer. Proxy/routing is a non-trivial processing chore, on top of the GUI operating system...and a dial-up...I don't think it's the best formula for feeding a MUCH faster machine.

How much RAM is in the 133? The hard drive in the 133 is probably (at best) an Ultra-33 / 5400 RPM...certainly functional, but not real fast...especially if it's fragged, and if the machine is short of RAM (lots of swapping to disk).

You'd probably do better to put the fast machine up as the proxy, and tail-end the other system off of that.

I'm partial to PC Anywhere....

My 133 has 64MB of Ram and not much swapping is going on. Yes the HD is a ultra 33/5400rpm. The reason my 133 is the server cause my expensive 56K modem is an ISA and my super comp doesn't have any ISA slots.

Some one told me installing Netbeui would speed up my network or give me alot of headaches. Would installing Netbeui help my situation?

that's about normal for 10 meg shared ethernet.

not to mention the slow processor

Actually, you do have netbeui installed--it's running as netbeui over TCP/IP.

Adding it on it's own probably won't help your performance problem.
