Help error loading Quake3 Demo

Quake 3 demo will not load on friends machine
The system has an ATI rage pro card on an FCI MB with Intel 800mhz chip.
OS windows 2000 pro with 256 meg memory.
Error message is:

Looks like glide isn't properly installed.

glide is 3dfx not ati, isn't it?

i used to get that one sometimes. it's the part where quake3 falls over if something is wrong in my experience unfortunately.

tried getting updated device drivers from ati's website?

did your friend try to upgrade the demo.. I don't think the patches work for the demo..

So what i think everone is saying i can not load a demo on this system.I will probably have to install the full version and upgrade with patches later.I just wanted to show him how it looked.Everything i get involved with is complicated.
