Help: dvd hiccups!

I get occasional hiccups when playing a dvd on my computer, yet I have no idea why. I use to have an older system, and I recently got a computer upgrade, but the hiccups still persist. Any clues? I'm using cyberlink's powerdvd version 4.0.

Old system specs:
p3 450
128mb pc 100
Abit BH6
diamond tnt2
creative soundblaster live value
creative 12x dvd/cdrom drive

New system specs:
amd 1000
256mb ddr pc1500
Epox 8kha
diamond tnt2
creative soundblaster live value
createive 12x dvd/cdrom drive

I have two harddrives, and they are the primary master and slave. My dvd drive is the secondary master, with no secondary slave. What could possibly be the problem?

this should really be posted in general hardware... but just to get you started, make sure it's not using pio. getting a dvd ripping program is a good way to test whether you're at optimal performance or not.

I have that same combo too and I used to get a whole lot of hiccups. What I did was made sure the SB Live! wasn't sharing an IRQ with the video card, and also played my DVD's at 800x600 (since that is the closest to the native resolution of a DVD). That helped the problem, but didn't fix it entirely. I found that if I Overclocked my computer, the pauses would become unbearable. I came to the conclusion that it was that piece of junk soundblaster Live!, dumped it, got a Santa Cruz and the pauses are almost gone. I have an older via chipset P3 MB (Tyan Trinity 400) , and since it got worse when I OCed, I had a feeling it was a problem between the chipset and the sound card, somthing that was semi-confirmed by the effect of the sound card change.

I don't think I'm going to go via for my next MB though. It all depends what's availible.

Guys, I'm sorry to say this, but do you think it MAY possibly be this player? This isn't the first time I've heard of this problem happening with this particular DVD Rom. And I don't see the soundcard being the problem either. You guys may want to check up on some other forums and see what other owners of this drive have to say about it. I'm not trying to call you guys liars or say that you don't know what you're talking about, but I see that on the two systems that 'dfi' mentions, the only constant is the drive with the similar problems. Think about it..............
