I just upgraded to the following parts:
mobo: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P P45 775 R
cpu: e5200
heatsink: stock that comes with e5200
videocard: palit hd3870 512mb
powersupply: antec earthwatts 500w
ram: ocz reaper 2 gigs(i checked to make sure this was supported by mobo and it is)

did a clean install of windows XP home, however the DVD drive is not functioning in windows. what is strange is that i was able to boot from the windows install cd to complete the installation using the dvd drive, but once i get to the desktop, the dvd drive does not work and instead appears as "removable disk(d: )" in my computer. it gives me some I/O error if i try to open it.

this is a problem because the driver disk that came with the mobo is a DVD...if i cant use the dvd drive, i cant install the network card drivers or any other drivers(and since i cant install the network drivers, i cant get online to get any other drivers). if i try to put the DVD into my cd-rw, and then click "explore" for that drive, it just shows up as empty. however, if i boot from the mobo DVD, then it does work and it takes me to some kind of recovery program that i guess i can use to create a backup image. so, it seems like neither the DVD, cd-rw drive or the dvd drive is defective.

the cd/rw and dvd drives are just cheap off brand stuff, but they worked absolutely perfectly prior to me doing this upgrade last night. i am not sure if they are ide or scsci, but i can tell you that the cable goes from one drive into the other where the same cable then splits and goes into the motherboard(i am pretty sure the motherboard says ide where i plug it in). i have a power cable plugged into both drives and they open and function properly. as for bios, i have not touched anything and just let everything boot set to auto.

does anyone know what the heck is going on? thanks.

Yes, your optical drives are IDE.

The first thing to try is to go to a friend's house and download SP3, burn it to a CD, and install it on your machine using the CD drive (I assume that drive is still working fine...). This might clear up the issue immediately, and besides...if you go online with a clean XP install, and you don't have a hardware firewall, your machine will possibly be compromised within about four minutes or so.

If SP3 doesn't resolve it, check the jumpers on the drives. I think that if both are set to Master, the drive at the end of the cable gets priority (or maybe I'm talking out my butt again...if so, someone else here will provide me with some tissue...). Either set both drives to CSEL, or set the drive at the end of the cable to Master, and set the other drive to Slave.

If jumpers don't resolve it, unhook the cable from the CD drive, and be sure the DVD drive is at the end of the cable set to CSEL. If that doesn't resolve it, I would highly recommend a Samsung S223Q.

So right now you are running the system without the motherboard drivers installed?

If thats the case then get online and download the drivers from the manufatures web site and put them on a thumb drive. Then you will be able to install the drivers. That should clear up the DVD drive issue. If not then there is more happening here.

Its a matter of what OS your running. If you look one of the drivers doesn't list Vista while the other does. So if you have Vista get the drivers that support Vista.
