Help DSL and USB

I myself have never seen this before. But I have a cable modem and using a netgear rt314 router. Anyways my fatherinlaw has DSL and want me to buy him a router and install it so he can get 2 pcs out to the internet. I was explaining how I would do this BUT he said he doesnt have a network card he doesnt think because the modem is going into his USB port? Does that sound right? I have never heard of this, but again I havnt messed with DSL before. Can someone explain how DSL hooks up? Do you hook a RJ11 at one end to the wall jack and the other end to the modem then from the modem back to your PC? Hes saying back to his PC is going through a USB port. This is without a router of course. If so I dont know how I would beable to use a router since it doesnt have a RJ 45 end??

Thanks!

All Home DSL Modems are connected to the Tel. Line via RJ-11 wire.

On the other side DSL Modem to PC, there are three kinds.

1. Internal DSL modem.
2. External DSL USB modem.
3. External DSL Ethernet modem.

Of the three only External DSL Ethernet modem. (3) Can connect to Cable/DSL Home Router (like the RT314).

In other word, you in law is out of luck. He has three options.

1. Leave it, as it is (no Router).
2. Convince his ISP to exchange the USB modem with Ethernet Modem.
3. Buy a DSL Ethernet modem.

Tell him to get rid of the USB modem. If you think about it , USB only has 12 Mb bandwidth, and to hook up high speed access, you can have lots of trouble with usb printers, scanners, cameras, etc due to bandwidth.

The problem in this situation is that there aren't any USB routers out there. Call the ISP and try to get it switched to an RJ-45 model.

Is there anyway I can hook up a nic card to the PC that has the USB DSL modem and go to a router or if anything go to a hub and use something like Sygate Software?

I told him to call and try and switch out the USB to a Nic card and modem. I cant even believe BellSouth hooked it up like that!

Pacbell gave me the choice of the RJ45 type setup with a NIC and an external modem or with just a USB modem -- elected to go with the NIC and RJ45 modem.
