I built a Tbird on MSI K7T Pro 2 system using an oem Pioneer slot drive for a friend. I put in an Aopen GForce 2MX agp card that came with WIN DVD 2000. When he tried to play a DVD movie we get a snowy picture full of colored pixils moving all over the screen. I have never used DVD before. There is no DVD card. Any idea what's wrong. The drive is recognized and set to DMA, but we didn't install any drivers for it. Thanks

What version of windvd is it, could be a vid card/dvd player conflict. I've only used PowerDVD and haven't had any problems with it.

It's the full version of WinDVD 2000 and it comes with the video card so you wouldn't think Aopen would ship it without noticing that it was incompatable woth their card, but I don't know.

I never used WinDVD either. Only tried PowerDVD like Tonec. But have you tried messing around with the settings? Try another disc?

Moonbeam,

Which OS are you running? If W2K, I'd still check out that WinDVD version. They're at version 2.3 now. Earlier versions either don't work or don't work well with W2K. Just thought I'd toss that out.

Jim

Thanks Jay, I installed Win 98. I'll edit this if I can get the version of WinDVD. I don't have the machine here. I later checked out WinDVD and saw there are versions. I downloaded 3.0 trial from a site in England. The Aopen site that shipped the card with that DVD player only says "Full Version". Again, don't know if this is still a possible source of problem if we're running 98, but will try to get the version #.

edit: Version # 7.00.142

Double edit: Version 2.1 not 7.00.142

Hi, Moonbeam.

Well, shucks. Any WinDVD version should work with Win98. I'm beginning to wonder if the problem is caused by the video drivers? Are they the latest available for Win9X?

Jim

from what i've read, WinDVD is basically, well, crap...
I use powerDVD, no problems - flawless operation, high quality, etc..
no specifci dvd drivers installed for my creative 5X DVD, just generic
ones recognized by windows...

if u're not getting any picture whatsoever, none of the configuration settigns
will give u picture - moer htan likely that is...most settings are merely preferential,
though there are some that may affect whether or not u get a pciture...
just tinker w/ the screen/video settings...

You might want to update to 2.3 -- if they don't try to charge you an arm and a leg for it. Are you able to register on the Web site so that you can get to the download page? They don't make it very apparent how or why you're supposed to do this. Of course, I'm an old fart, so there are a lot of things that aren't apparent to me. Anyway, I purchased WinDVD online. I'm not sure how they go about registering people who got their software in a package with hardware, nor do I know how they go about honoring requests for updates under such circumstances.

Actually I like WinDVD. A lot. In my search for DVD players, I stuck with WinDVD because it had good sound and extremely good picture compared to PowerDVD. It works fine with Win98, it could be because your friend has Win2K?

Nope, he's got Win98 and we tried 2.3 I think, I haven't seen it myself to check the version. The problem is still there. There seem to be no other problems with the system except for DVD movies. Games play fine.

So many variables, so little time. :D

I said earlier that I thought that any version of WinDVD would work in Win98, but you might wish to check out this thread. Evidently version 2.3 fixed some problems with DVD playback on a Win98 machine. (Of course, if it turns out that you actually have already tried version 2.3 --) This version certainly proved to be a tremendous improvement under W2K.

Here's hoping!

I have WinDVD 2.1 and I am using Win98se and it works perfectly.

And Power DVD bites IMO. To each his own though.

What version of Directx and what Vid drivers are you using? I would focus here.

No you don;t need any drivers for the DVD drive. Those are DOS drivers and are unecessary.
