I have comcast cable internet and I use a router to connect to the internet. I have two computers hooked up to the router.

After running ad-aware and installing the new windows update (this morning - 8/01/04) I restarted my first computer and I couldn't connect to the internet.

I woke up this morning, and started my computer and the same problem was happening. I checked my other computer and it was connecting fine.

So i restarted the router, computer, and modem and no solution for the first computer.

I called up comcast and they said to do the same thing. I even connected the modem directly to the computer and the same problem was happening. They told me to go into ipconfig and asked me to release and i was still getting a 169.x.x.x ip.

They said the problem was the network card and to change it. So instead of changing it, i hooked up the wireless usb adaptor that came with the router. This didn't fix the problem and i called comcast back up.

I told them that the wireless card worked on my other computer but why isn't it working on this one (i tried it on my other computer which was previously hooked up with a wired network card).

She said that i should replace my network card (like the first lady said) and call up my motherboard manufacturer (DELL, since i bought the computer from them and they put in their own crappy mobos) and have them send me a new one.

I still think it is a software problem. So i uninstalled the old (built into the mobo) Intel network card in device manager and hooked up a PCI network card. THe problem continues to persist.

I even uninstalled Zonealarm, my firewall program.

Can anyone please help me out?

THANKS

Uninstalling the card in the device manager might not be enough.

If it is an Independent card take it out, if it is in Mobo NIC, switch it Off in the BIOS.

Reboot once with no card and then install the spare PCI card.
