HELP! Does anybody own a Samsung 244T 24" panel?

I am hoping someone here has this panel and can confirm that with FPS games the refresh is indeed fast with absolutely no ghosting at all(it's reportedly faster than the Dell 2405)

There is no way I am ordering the 2405 after reading the sad tales on the Dell forum of many, many of these panels having a high pitched whine after warm-up, and folks receiving refurbished units in exchange. This has been going on since last May, and there are 36 pages of this on the Dell forum. It's sad and pitiful that I am going to have to pay an additional $500 to avoid the possibility of this happening.

At one point, the Dell forum moderator said this had been escalated to Dell Engineering to find a fix. A month later, the moderator is nowhere to be found-sounds like he was silenced by somebody, so they can keep selling this for an incredible price($841 right now)

For anyone out there with a 2405 without this issue, I applaud you for getting a great deal on an otherwise very nice panel.

Anyway, wondering if anyone has the 244T? the little I can find about it on the web are sterling reviews.

thanks!

The thing about a forum is that you will only hear from people who have problems. By a huge margin, most people with the 2405 are happy and do not have this problem (and will not be in the forums).

If you are a Costco member, you can get the Dell 2405 from them. If you order online, you can still return it to any Costco for a full refund if you have any issues. This makes it a pretty safe purchase, and can save you a lot of money over the Samsung.

Hey kmmatney,

OK now you're just confusing me, just when I had my mind made up!!

I had no clue Costco sold them. and at a lower price than Dell mail order. I live in Columbus, OH and they have a location in Cleveland, which I will be at tomorrow for a business meeting....hmmmmm

Costco's web site says they offer a 100% money back guarantee if I am not satisfied...

so if I get a panel that has this whining problem, I can take it back with no problem, it sounds like(I would confirm this in person)

My only concern at this point is that the 244T is said to be a generation ahead of the 2405 from a pixel refresh perspective, sporting a 6ms GtG time. Now I know that refresh rates are subjective, and they are a lot of marketing.

But hey, as you suggested, I could try the 2405, and if I don't like it, it's only a 1.5 hour drive to return it, get my money back and pay an additional $600 to get the 244T.

Thanks very much for the post! I think this is a great no-risk option for me.

The folks at Anandtech continue to be the most helpful folks with anything PC related!!

Based on the hardware.fr comparisons of VA panels with 8+ and 6 ms response time, there is a huge difference in favor of the latter. In this case, it doesn't seem to be marketing - according to hardware.fr, the 6 ms panel is actually the first VA matrix from Samsung suited for heavy and fast-paced gaming.

Both prad.de and hardware.fr (two pretty useful and credible sites, I'd say) complained about very distracting or even unbearable ghosting on the Dell monitor in quick games.

I had the Samsung 244t, and although "ghosting" wasn't an issue, the input lag was very noticeable to me (which I think is worse than ghosting). This is an issue for many people on the 2405 as well, and there are a few threads about it:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=937127

I ran the same test as this guy and noticed the exact same problem on the 244t. He has a video that shows the issue:

http://weblogs.asp.net/ryanw/archive/2004/09/23/233681.aspx

I ran the test with the 244t and a 21" crt on a 7800gt dual head in clone mode. Regardless of which display was the primary/clone, the lcd would show noticeable lag when moving around on the desktop, etc. The response just feels sluggish on the desktop and in games. Not everyone notices it, and most get used to it and never notice the problem. Unfortunately, there are a lot of us that do notice it.

There's still a lot of speculation about what actually causes this. Some say it may be related to how the overdrive technology works by buffering frames to determine the most optimized pixel outputs. Many people have improved the lag by overriding the refresh rate to 100hz (even though the panels only support 60hz).

Lag or jerkiness? Make sure when you are in clone mode that you are running the displays both at the same refresh rate. A lot of people probably forget to do this.
