HELP, DMA burner problem?

summary: Do I need to find out how to force set from PIO to DMA? Device Manager says all my drives and opticals are in DMA.

symptoms: I've got a strong system with three DVD burners (two ASUS and one Pioneer, all latest models, all three on SATA .

I have a quad cpu, 8GB ram, Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard, 4 hard drives installed (2 SATA, 2 IDE from old system) and a couple external drives plugged in to USB, also other devices on USB.

I'm running Windows Vista 64bit, it's been working fine.

Anyway, yesterday I was burning two DVDs simultaneously and they did fine, burned at 18x according to Nero 7 Reloader, maybe 4 minutes or so. Today trying the same thing, burning about 4 GB to multiple recorders (2) and it's taken 40 minutes to burn them! It's supposedly burning at 18x but clearly it's burning more like 1X!

I don't know what I might have done to change it. drives are set to DMA. The only thing I changed is to install Word Perfect X3, could that have caused the problem?

CLUES:

The buffer level, during the burn, bounces back and forth from low to high between each drive. When the first drive is 97%, the second is 14%, then they reverse. It's almost like some kind of checking or something is going on, but I don't have any verification enabled.

Before today, both drives would sit at 98% and just burn away. Right now I'm burning Philips DVR-R rated at 1-16X. It's on track now to burn both disks in about 40 minutes...instead of the 6-7 min it was doing before.

Have had same results with Riodata and Verbatim, 4x and 16X respectively: all worked fine before, now not doing well at all.

Never mind, I figured it out...one of the two burners (#2 and #3) I was using was plugged into the external SATA. Apparently that was more than the board can handle (Asus P5W DH deluxe). I changed the cabling so both are on internal now and it's working fine again. Before I was using burner #1 and #2, which were both plugged into internal SATA connectors.
