When running the Direct3D hardware test in DirectX diagnostics I'm getting:

"Failure at Step 5(GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x886086a (3D not available)"

and the test fails.

Also, none of the new screensavers for XP work. I get the message "Direct3D device not found."

My basic specs:

PIII 800
Geforce2 Pro 32MB (27.42 drivers)
Win XP Pro (clean install)

I've tried reinstalling/changing drivers multiple times and nothing is working. Any advise will be appreciated.

Thanks.

I found the solution at another forum. In case anyone else has this problem, the solution is simple. Just run dxdiag and disable D3D. Then re-enable D3D and the problem is gone, and everything works (including the new XP Plus screensavers). Apparently the problem is due to some stupid XP bug.
