HELP: DHCP Doesnt work on PC with XP

I have a laptop with Windows XP Pro giving fits so I messed with some "registry cleaners". Bad Idea. Now I cannot get connectivity UNLESS I manually configure the IP, DNS, and Gateway.

Using DHCP = I get the automatic private IP and no connectivity to internet / router etc.
Manual IP config = complete working connection

I have tried several things.
-winsockxpfix.exe
-reinstalling tcp/ip
-reinstall the networking card and wireless drivers

The DHCP server is NOT the problem as I have 8-10 others on that work, and others CAN join (not out of IP addresses).

This problem acts the same on wireless OR wired.

PLEASE HELP!

What IP are you getting? 169.x.x.x? Are you getting default gateway, dns, and subnet?

Is your DHCP a router? Perhaps you can clear the DHCP table.

If all else fails, you can always do a system restore and roll back to an earlier point.

I get the default private IP (169.0xx.xx.xx). Standard. None of the other settings come in.

DHCP is a router (1 wireless and 1 wired) 2 different ones. Its nothing on the router. Where is the DHCP table? ON the router? If so, it wont help. It does this at multiple locations (different routers) as well.

I do not use system restore since the user is always short on HD space. I will from here one out, BUT I need to try and fix this dhcp problem.

Thanks for the suggestions. 🙂

Thanks TFinch, I tried all those suggestions. No change at all.

To recap.
Using DHCP Gets the "limited or no connection" error
Manual config results in things working fine. 🙂

Now you know not to mess with your registry. 😛 At least back up your registry before you go messing with it.

You can try a Windows restore with a XP CD.

I may have to try that, but won't that make me have to reinstall apps?

No. Everything should remain the same, but you should still back up all your important data in case anything goes wrong.
