This problem just arose out of the blue. I currently have a Linksys WRT54S router with I have had for the past few years and never really had a problem with it. It now seems that for whatever reason, my wired connection to my desktop keeps dropping. The only way i can fix it is rebooting my computer where it will work all night, then i go to work, come home, and i lose connection again. I'm running a dual boot, but i primarily use XP SP2.

My laptop is working fine wirelessly at the same time that my wired desktop is not working.

I cannot figure out what it can be, i cannot even access the router settings from the computer once i lose connection, nor can i reset my lan connection from the control panel.

Any ideas?

I have unplugged and rebooted router, modem, unplugged all cat5 wires from the router and inserted each individually... nothing helps!

Either your NIC (whether it's a card, or built-in to the motherboard) is going bad, or you need to reload Windows. BTW, have you tried changing ports on the router? That port going bad is also a possibility.

edit: And now that I think about it, the first thing you should do is buy a new cable for that computer. It could be as simple as a worn out cable/connector.

I'll try a few of those things to try and flesh out possibilities, but i have 2 problems with any of those fixes. If my onboard Lan (Asus A8n deluxe) was not working, a simple reboot would probably not fix it. Also, IRC would probably not continue to work if it was a physical hardware issue. I am assuming its a software issue myself.

What ports would i change on my router? My html port i guess? I dont know what that port is and how you would like me to change it? forward it?

Some onboard gigabit controllers are a little heat sensitive. The reboot usually fixes them for a while.

Google... "Linksys WRT54S dropping connection" :(

Thanks for the info blain, ill try to see if i can somehow make airflow better. I also have two gigabit controllers, maybe ill try the other one.

The linksys router isnt the problem. My wireless still works (and i never have wireless connectivity issues or drops in connections). When you google, everyone is complaining about wireless problems, not lan problems.

TOday i came home after 4 hours not home and it lost connection again, this time to IRC also. WHen i tried to connect to IRC again, it said...."unable to connect to server (no buffer space available).. I am not sure if this helps w/ the problem, i dont even know what buffer space its talkin about. I tried the winstock fix from another thread, that did help

switch ports
wire your laptop to original port of pc on router
see if it drops
if it doesn't, its not the router
if its the pc...
9 dollar or less for 100mbs nic these days since they are essentially worthless
