I just received a Dell Inspiron E1405 from Dell.
When the laptop is closed, the screen doesn't lock in to the base firmly.
Shake the laptop a little, the screen moves up and down quiet a bit while still locked in to the base.

This worries me. I have not experienced this problem with E1505 or E1705 laptops.

Is this normal for E1405?

No, this is not normal. Mine does not move the slightest.
Edit: that is, with my E1705. The 1405 shouldn't be any different. Contact Dell about it... the online chat is usually the easiest way to go since you don't actually have to talk to someone in India :)

Not sure about sales lines, but unless you have Gold Tech support added to your order I'm pretty sure you always get India.

Pay for the Gold Tech support if you want good tech support from Dell.

If you tell them that theres a problem with the screen they'll probably repair it as long as its under warranty.

i spoke to tech support last week about replacing screens...i'm guessing if the screen doesn't close it's a defect so it should be covered

What I meant is that when you do the online chat, you don't actually have to speak with somebody, no matter where they are. Sometimes when I've called, I just can't understand them. When you do the online chat, it's far easier to communicate.

How much movement are we talking about here? My new inspiron 6400 has 1-2 mm of play with the lid closed. Is that normal?

Ya'll are making me worry. :p

1-2mm probably isn't much to worry about, especially if you have to move it yourself.

You can play with tightening the hinge on the back to make the lcd movement tighter. If that doesn't help then give support a call or a chat. If you're gonna call, call just after 8am EST because that's when the north american call centers open and they aren't swamped yet. If you move a lot with the notebook it's gonna damage the lcd eventually and at that point, warranty isn't going to cover the damage because you never called in before.

As for the small business support all being in India, nope it's not. It depends on what time of day you call and how busy each call center is. You might reach one of many centers in the U.S., Canada, India, Panama, etc. If you want to speak to someone who is a native english speaker 100% of the time, get the Gold Tech support contract. Less waiting, more knowledgeable reps and you don't have to do as much troubleshooting over the phone.

Hope this is insightful :)

Thanks guys.

There is a 3mm gap when the lid closed.
The E1505s I have used seen to be better.

I did email tech support.
They said I can send it in for repair.

I might take a rain check on that. I've been too busy lately.
