hello. first post here. i need some good opinions on a good DDR mobo w/o spending too much dinero. Another question I had is kinda stupid: what is the difference between something like the form factor KT266 and DDR .. are they analagous? No clue. Thanks

Welcome to the forum Parkie!

Ok.. Let's clear up some of the questions first, such as KT266 and DDR. DDR is in reference to the type of memory for the motherboard. There is DDR Ram , and regular SDRAM (they are not interchangeable). Secondly is KT266, that is the chipset the motherboard uses. For a DDR solution there is AMD760, KT266, or one other that for some strange reason escapes me at the moment.

As for a good, cheap mobo, I don't know how good it is yet, but I just purchased a DFI AK76 motherboard. Got it for roughly $110, and I'll be installing it tonight (new toy just came in) to see how it goes. I'll be posting another message about the board once I get it setup and put through some torture tests..

If overclock is not your concern, try ECS K7S5A which support both DDR and SDRAM
for about $63. Has sound and LAN build-in. Save $40 and you can buy a faster CPU without overclock.
And it has a solid performance compare to other DDR board (or should i say better performance).

It's called ECS K7S5A. It may be the highest performing DDR board out, and it can be had for only $65 at newegg. The only con is that there's no ocing features on it, so yeah it's a great inexpensive board (Like most ECS boards).

<< you think this is a good deal for ECS K7VZA w/ 1.2Ghz 266FSP + Fan? >>

Not really. Using their prices they are only saving you $7.00 plus a cheap HSF that you will probably not use. You can find a better price on the processor with Pricewatch. It is not a terrible deal, just not something "to write home about."
