Help: "Data Is Invalid" Error on Windows XP when Installing Seismic Edge Drivers

I got my Seismic Edge sound card (PSC705) in the mail yesterday from PCMicrostore.com.

My PC runs Windows XP professional running on Gigabyte GA-7DX board. I disabled onboard sound in the bios, then I plugged in this card and rebooted.

Windows XP detects the sound card and asks me to select appropriate driver. I used the CD supplied by Philips to load the driver. Files were copied to C:\Windows\System32 and then an error came up "Data Is Invalid".

I went to the Philips site and downloaded the latest drivers (v1.89). When I installed the new drivers also I get the same error "Data Is Invalid".

Called up Philips, they asked me to move the sound card to a different PCI slot. I did that and rebooted. Again XP detects the card, and when I install the drivers, I get "Data Is Invalid".

Has anybody faced this problem before? I know that you guys are Gurus, please help!

Does your motherboard have a jumper that you have to switch to disable onboard sound? Like on my board I have to change a jumper and also turn off in the bios.

Did you get the PSC705 1.89 drivers? There are different drivers for the AE (PSC706) and also drivers for the older SEesmic Edge, the PSC704.

GrumpyMan: I will check tonight if I have a jumper to disable onboard sound on my motherboard.

Insane3D: Yes, I got the PSC705 1.89 drivers.

Has anybody else faced this problem? It is happening to me consistently. I can't believe that I'm the only person facing this problem!

Last option is to reformat and do a clean install of XP,it`s possible that parts of the old sound drivers left in the registry could be causing the problem.

Ok I searched the net for the exact string "data is invalid" and I found that this is a common problem in XP when installing new hardware on PCI slots. Solution according to Viahardware.com -

Why do I get the message "data is invalid" when installing a device driver under WindowsXP?
This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers (sound cards and SCSI drivers have been reported). To fix this problem, go to Start, Run... and type "regedit" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI

and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to install. Right Click on the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'Permissions' and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your device.

I will try this out and post back my results.

Modified my registry as per above advice. Driver installation was smooth after this was done.

Enjoying my Seismic Edge card!
