ooooooooooooooooook.....

so one of my raptors died the other day and i've been forced to reformat and reinstall windows + everything else on another hd. after a slew of problems with these new nvidia drivers making my cursor freeze up, i've finally found a set of older (high 70's series) video drivers that work from the nvidia forums. once i got the basic drivers setup i went on to my antivirus/antispyware/etc and then obviously on to my basic apps/office/etc/etc.

after i got everything back to normal (which is really a fairly basic setup software wise), i started to play a game or two and i noticed that i was freezeing every second or two in some of the different games. when i checked out the task manager/performance tab i noticed that when i opened windows explorer or ie or even firefox that my cpu load would go to like 100% or very close. when i minimized the game or the window, load would go down to a couple of percent.

there are no viruses or spyware on the machine to speak of and i've scanned the computer with the programs i have and also checked with hijack this etc/etc/etc.

if you have any suggestions or things i can try, please post so i can fix this~ =(

whenever firefox or windows explorer runs, the computer almost freezes up completely.....almost EVERYTHING (from hl2 to winrar) causes the cpu load to go to 100%.

i have a 90 nm 3500+...so its not an old chip by any means. i'm not really aware of any patches/drivers for amd64 chips, but i've never experienced cpu lag/load like this.

any thoughts or suggestions? ANYONE? maybe a diag i can run that will give me some more information? =x

did you have the same problem before? well... firefox has a problem of leaking memory.. i too, lagging much when its happen.. and IE use much of the memory.. if your memory is full then processor works harder.. (swap in and out of the cache more often).. maybe you could close all the window before playing

ok, here's another way to look at the problem: http://img267.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cpulag6rh.jpg

here is a log from everest that gives as detailed specs as i know of: http://files.filefront.com/Everest_Reporttxt/;4740333;;/fileinfo.html

here is hijack this telling me everything is semi-clean: http://files.filefront.com/hijackrar/;4740371;;/fileinfo.html

i installed the chipset drivers from asus's site, but since you mentioned it, i am downloading and trying the current/updated via hyperion drivers to see if they help out......any and all help is appreciated.

1) didnt have the problem before or ever

2) i dont play with any of those windows open

3) if you check out the image in my above post, you'll find that the memory isnt an issue.

Please cut/paste the result of the hijackthis log directly into a forum post.

To eliminate net lag, this happens when you play in single player mode, correct?

Why is a process for a Tablet PC running?

:\WINDOWS\system32\WISPTIS.EXE

Remove the following from startup:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe

i just tested it again to be sure (in more than one game), and it was not as bad as actual online play, but still happened (random choppyness). overall i would say the problem spans everything i do on the computer compared to before...things take longer and there are noticeable random spikes from time to time (sometimes it will even cause distortion in the audio that is playing).

Layout your complete system specs please.

I want to know what games you see this on and what resolution you're playing them at. You do realize that "choppyness" will occur playing on line, especially if your ping is high.

The CPU spikes you see are actually pretty normal. You can get a short, 100% spike just opening a program and you WILL get 100% CPU usage when there's a game running.

Did you shutdown any unneeded XP services? I didn't see it in your hijackthis log, but you're not running any antivirus apps, right? Did you try closing ALL those apps in your system tray when gaming? Personally, when I game, there's not single icon in the system tray....ALL unnecessary processes are shutdown for maximum performance.

yes, i was having some problems with norton so i killed it for the time being. i also shut down almost everything unecessary and it did help last night when i was playing counter-strike and/or day of defeat (among other things....cod2/hl2/fear...tested things in most of the games i have currently installed)

as far as the game stuff goes...i'm doing things as i always have...1024x768 with <50 ping online.

system wise, i'm running:

amd 3500+
asus a8v-e deluxe
bfg 6800 ultra
wd 74gb raptor
1 gb corsair xms memory

if for some reason you want the exact info on each of those components, the everest log file in my above post should give you more info than i even understand.

OK, good enough, just wanted to make sure you had a good enough PC before I continued. :)
