Help! D-Link DWL-520+ won't let my pc shut down

It reboots, screen displays orange bars/locks, or it just hangs. Without this card, no problem. Have tried it on two computers, same thing. One a P2-400/BX board, the other an AXP1700/nForce board. Slot it's in doesn't matter. Have fdisked, reformatted both, to no avail. Functions fine other than this, but obviously I can't keep shutting off the power manually. OS is ME.
Anyone familiar with this?

BTW- I called D-Link "tech support" after 1/2 hour of holding, the guy (Octavio) listens to my story, says he has to go talk to someone, comes back, and tells me he's going to walk me through reinstalling it. Nice. I waited half an hour for a guy to tell me to reinstall it.

Wireless PCI cards behave strange at time, and usually there is nothing you can do about it.

I would return the Card and get the USB of the same line.

Windows Millenium is the root of many problems. It was a Microsoft OS fart.

With regards to your D-LINK product (btw, my opinion on D-LINK is similar to WinME, a network company fart) - have your compared your current firmware with what is available on the D-LINK website?

I was planning to return it tomorrow if I received no help on it tonite, and get a Microsoft wireless router/usb. (BB didn't have any D-Link USB, and I've been less than thrilled with their stuff)

As far as the firmware goes, I'm going to skip that. The P2-400 machine I started it on isn't exactly "state of the art", so I'm guessing they haven't done any updates that would help it with the ancient BX chipset? (for that matter, the nForce is over a year old)

I like ME fine, I could use any OS I want, and bought it last year. (at work I use 2000Pro and XP Pro) I upgrade my hardware a lot and don't want to call MS for activation codes. ME doesn't spy on me. (I don't have anything to hide, but don't think MS deserves to know what's on my HDD because I bought their software) Hardware manufacturers write drivers for ME still and probably will do so until MS stops supporting it, at which point I'll make a very reluctant change to XP.

Thanks for the tip on cards like this just not working well. (D-Stink)

WinME is temperamental when it comes to Network. While most of the code is WIN98SE, some of the network Code is a Hybrid of Win2000. Therefore you better off using Win98SE.

I have few old computers TX (boards). Wireless USB client cards work very well in them, one computer actually works nicely with DWL-120 (D-Link USB Wireless Client).

I am not in love with D-Link. However fair is fair the Blue stuff or the Gray stuff, are not better.

Well said.

I was referring to the firmware on the D-LINK unit. LOL I like the D-Stink comment too! HAHA!

Hopefully JackMDS's comments will help you to the road to resolution.

Ever see Johnny Carson do his "Great Carnak" psychic bit?

<envelope on head>
"D-Stink drivers, D-Stink pci card, all problems"
<Rips open envelope, reads>
"Things that won't be in my box tomorrow"

Man, I have spent WAAAAAY too much time on this D-Stink debacle. I should have took the whole mess back (not just the card) when Octavio the Tech told me he was going to walk me through installing it again, and that I should return it if that doesn't work. If I didn't have to hold so long to get through I'd call him back and say,"Octavio, my man. I bought my 3 year old a new computer long before he needed one due to problems your POS nic gave me on his P2-400. So why don't you tell why your product doesn't work on a clean install of a MS OS they still support, on two different name brand motherboards in the mature stage of their product cycle?"
Octavio would probably tell me I need to reboot.

Thanks Jack, I had forgotten about the Win2K component of ME networking. (on the other hand, I've had no issues with other NICs that don't say D-Stink on the side)

I think I'll shoot a copy of this link to D-Stink and show them the word of mouth bad tech/tech support gets them.

Hmmmmm.

All I have to say about this experience is this:

If you you're not up on networking, the USB is DEFINITELY the way to go. Fine MS gives you a wizard to set the whole thing up, no hardware conflicts, no shutdown debacles......

<kicks self hard for not doing this the first time>

Those pci cards might be great for XP, but with ME they are a nightmare.
