Help!!!:D buying ram tomorrow need some advice.

Hi all,

I'm a bit stuck, i have been searching the forums for hours, but cant find an answer.

I have some corsair XMS twinx ram which i brought awhile ago (2x512mb) (3200C2 platinum). (on an amd 64bit 3200 system with the k8t neo mobo).

I thought this was pretty good ram (was expensive, but now as i check the timings, its 3-3-3-8, this sounds bad?.

Now i want to upgrade to 2GB ram, i am thinking of adding a 1GB stick of corsair 1GB DDR XMS3200PT(400MHz DDR). , which apparently has a speed of 4-4-4-8 or simular?.

So will this upgrade auctally slow me down?. are these memory timings ok for 2GB of XMS?.

I thought i was buying good ram, i picked the XMS plat over the value ram, but i don't understand why the latency on all of these is so high?.

I want to get another GB tomorrow, but i need some imput, to make sure i'm not buying bad high latency ram that may lower my performance.

Thanks,

the main use is for future games, and current memory hogs, video editing, ect.

Thanks for any help.

Your motherboard sets the latency values. Just go in there and change them. Also, your memory voltage may be set too low to run the rated latencies. I would make sure your mem voltage is at least 2.7, then lower those latencies and run memtest86 to test for stability. That memory is pretty good stuff and you should be able to run much lower timings than that. Raise the voltage to 2.8 for more stability, I believe that ram comes with heatspreaders, so it you have good airflow in your case, you should be fine.

i'm not sure, but bump....i'm also curious as to whether it would slow down timings if one has 4-4-4-8, and the other has 3-3-3-8...i imagine it would, because the bios sets the timing for all slots the same. If the 4-4-4-8 can't handle 3-3-3-8, then the timings for all of the slots would be 4-4-48; slowing down your faster ram

thanks, i did try changing the timings, wont run stable at much lower timings. (tried setting all to low, 2-2-2-8) or simular, but pc wouldnt start, and had to reset jumped on the mobo to get it to boot again.

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to ram, but in my bios it has options a bit different to the standard bios, anyone with the same mobo that can tell me exactly what to change?.

thanks

Going straight to 2-2-2-8 is a big jump. Try changing one thing at time and in one unit increments. Start with 2.5-3-3-8, then go maybe 2.5-2-3-8. You get the idea, take it slow to find the sweet spot and raise the voltage to raise stability.

I've always a good experience with corsair memory. You may wanna get the xms 3200C2PT, I believe it has better latencies and it looks like that website is having a special on that particular model. If latencies are really your concern, you might wanna go with 3200LLPT or 3200XLPT.

i just been messing with the timings, got it down to 2.5-3-2-8.

so i may be able to push it further.

The main problem is i only have three ram slots, two of them are taken up already by the 2x 512mb corsair, so i really need just one stick of 1GB.

but it seems all corsair XMS can be pushed to low latency timings?.

also one of the ram options said Burst delay, 8 or 4, that anything to worry about?.

also says bank cycle time (trc) 11 clocks, cycletime, (tras) 8 clocks, ram idle timer, 16 clocks, cas latency, 2.5 clocks, ras to cas latency 3 clocks, rad precharge 2 clocks,

That all normal?🙂

just got all my timings, what i have listed in bios is:

Burst length: 8 beat.

Cas latency: 2.5

TRCD: 3 (crashes when at 2)

TRAS: 5-15, i put it on auto (8)

TRP, managed to put this at 2 without crashing. this a decent overclock, or is TRCD really needed at 2?🙂

you know there is a rule that you are only supposed to bump once per 4 hours....

just set everything as low as you can without it crashing. search goole for memtest 86 and run it to test if you are stable without booting to windows. the lower the better for each value.

i'd recommend against getting a 1 gb chip. they are very expensive and you will not even use more than 1 gb for most applications

Hey, ok thanks, i may go with just a 512 chip. really thinking of future memory hungry games, everquest2, hl2, and whatever else comes out 🙂.

Hi. Your ram should run at CAS 2, since that is cerrtified CAS 2 ram by corsair. I think it's rated for 2-3-3-6. I have the same ram and have it running stably at 2-3-3-10. The reason I have it at 10 is that I have an A64, and tests have shown that the A64's run fastest with 10 TRas. Try 2-3-3-10 at 1T timings. Thats what Ihave and its running fine. Sometimes the Tras is second last in the list on your bios but don't let this fool you. It always has the widest range of numbers (5-15 or so like you said, differs per Mobo). Hope this helps.

Thanks.

I ordered a 512MB module (same as current corsair one, 3-3-3-8 timings, (which will take up my third and final ram slot). (will take me to a total of 3x 512MB modules)

Not sure if i should change my order to 1GB corsair 3200PT, (to bring me up to 2gb total(slightly higher cas though).

Question is, more ram, or less ram and less latency? not worried about the cost, just want the best performance.

let me know, as i still have time to change my order.

thanks.
