Help! Cut/Paste destroys my files!

I've got a 200gb Maxtor hdd. For Windows to recognize the full capacity of the drive I had to install the SP1 and a Big Drive Enabler registry fix I downloaded from Maxtor. Now the problem is that I had previously used this drive as a slave. I had divided it into three partitions of approximately 67gbs each. Now when I installed Windows XP on it, that third partition was temporarily unavailable as I hadn't yet updated Windows. Once I had installed the fixes previously described, I could see all the files on that third and final partition. However, although I can open the files and I can open copies of the files, cutting and pasting them to a different location makes them unreadable. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that this was the case until after I had begun reorganizing the drive's contents.

The obvious first step is to copy all the files to another drive and format the third partition. However, before I do that, I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what is causing this problem and if there is a way to fix it because if it's possible to recover the files I've lost, that'd be great.

Also, this is only a problem on that third partition. I can cut/paste without problems on the others.

Thanks.

My guess is that the third partition got screwed up somehow by your reinstall of Windows. Without the proper updates, Windows will see a partion that has been previously created on a drive over 137GB but it can not access it correctly. At least this was my experience. Since your third partition is after the 137GB limit, that would be my guess. I would get them off the partition if you can. They may already be FUBAR'd as it is.
