Help: Crossover Cable Confusion?

I'm a little confused about crossover ethernet cables. I was told that in order to network a replaytv to my computer and use Internet connection sharing I would need a crossover cable. Are these cables different than normal ethernet cables you use to connect say a computer to a router or are they the same thing. Thanks Rob

They are different.

A crossover cable has the transmit and receive pair exchanged at each end.

Your other choice is to use an intermediate switch or hub.

to add to that, the REASON you need a crossover is because normaly a network device (ie, computer) connects to some hardware like a hub, switch, or router. you only need a cross over when ever your are connecting one network device to another, ie a computer to another computer.

PC-(NIC) TO (NIC)-PC = crossover cable
PC-(NIC) TO HUB, Switch, Router or cable/DSL modem = normal network cable.
There are two pairs of wires used in the cable, a transmit pair and a recieve pair. In a crosover cable the two pairs are reversed so that one pair is transmit at one end but ends up as recieve at the other and vice versa. Ona normal cable the wires are connected to the same pins on both ends.
