[NOTE: This is being posted on more then the one forum, please forgive me if it should prove an issue, I don't, nor ever have I, see anything in forum rules against it and it has shown to be greatly beneficial to both parties before as I add posts updating with information collected from all forums involved.]
SETUP:
Alright, so my uncle gave his PC to my grandmother, just the computer none of the peripherals he was using with it, which include an external HDD among others. Well every time, 30-45 minutes post start up it crashes to a blue screen with text filling most of it -a windows error. It turns off far too quickly for a chance to read what it displays, so if I'm not there waiting watching for the screen to come up, I can't read a line of it -what I have been able to make may read something about 'memory leak, run out of memory, memory error' whatever it is the screen with the error is only displayed a brief moment, regards memory as the issue, and the computer shuts down.
No internet access. No real 3rd party 'system maintenance' software already installed. Not sure what if anything much, was formatted previously or how windows was last installed. Machine is some drive time away so as of now no quick access (I'm most likely going to bring it back to my place should I not resolve the issue this weekend to allow for more convenient testing).
TRIED: {NOTE: After each change system was restarted and awaited a crash before next test}
1. Add/Remove programs, when through this, removed some drivers to peripherals that were no longer attached, bits of things, etc.
2. Checked all internal hardware connections, unplugged/replugged in cables and wiring.
3. Some minor things, can't recall, may update this line should I remember.
4. Three sticks make up the RAM, 2x256 (? Generic & some similar 'value' brand) & 1x512 (Kingston) - I've left all but one in one-at-a-time to individually test them, but even with only one in at a time the same error is displayed at the same intervals.
EVENT VIEWER: {Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component View}
^-DxDiag:
Both of these I saved their reports to a 3x5, however the disk toasted itself/user error while trying to get them off and forced a format, so I won't have this information until the next time I'm over at her house, I'll update this accordingly once I have it.
SPECS: {NOTE: Again, DxDiag report was lost, will update this once have proper info}
MSI KT4V: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=362
?~1.5 GHz AMD Athlon
?~nVIDIA GeForce 5x Series
1gb RAM - 2x256 (? Generic & some similar 'value' brand) & 1x512 (Kingston)
WinXP SP?
ANY IDEAS?:
1. I will be talking to my uncle regarding windows last install and how/what was attached to it as an external/internal device that is no longer present, but what specific should I mention that we might not think of? What other kind of info would be pertinent to ask about (he is considerably more PC HW savvy than I, nonetheless there may be a thing or two we could could easily overlook).
2. What outside of the DxDiag and Event Viewer reports should I get off it?
3. What, if any, diagnostic tools or 3rd party (READ: non WinXP) applications can or should I install and run (realize I've only around 30-45 minutes in which to work)?
4. Hardware: What else can I test or change around? Anything else I can do with the memory.
5. What else should I include in this post? Get off the faulty PC (reports)?
MY PC & SWITCHING OUT HW BETWEEN THEM:
Should I be bringing the faulty PC to my place then I'll have access to my own PC aside it technically making it possible to physically test individual hardware components if need be I suppose. However, and this should be stressed, I am an absolute HW novice, and my PC itself is in the midst of a failing HSU which I have been slowly researching as to a resolution for which is besides the point other then to say it would be a possibility to switch some things out and test them, but as a last test type situation as I am not too comfortable nor is my PC setup in such a way that it makes it convenient to do so.
/Thanks ever so much I wholly appreciate it.
peace,
