i had a little trouble installing the heatsink and some thermal stuff got on the cpu and then about 15 mins of struggling later i finally got heatsink on...i have a feeling this is the prob and that it is mayb overheating and not spinning...or could it be a connection with cables somewhere?

if that is the prob it is easily fixed by cleaning off that thermal stuff and putting new on...correct?

how hard is it to put the new thermal paste on?

Check the third and fourth photos on this page if it's a SocketA system (AthlonXP/Duron/Sempron). If not... post some specs dude :)

You don't need Arctic Silver, as long as the thermal paste you have isn't terribly bad, then use it while following Arctic Silver's directions.

Although... you may want to invest in some higher-end thermal paste such as Arctic Silver.

If it's a retail Athlon64 then you are fine with the stock thermal paste, as long as you got the heatsink properly latched down. On to other stuff now. Did you...

1) mount the motherboard on standoffs so it doesn't short out on the motherboard tray (among other good reasons)?

2) plug in your ATX12V power cable

3) plug in the power cable to your video card, if your video card is the type that requires one

4) visually check that the RAM and video card are FULLY seated in their slots (you shouldn't be able to see the gold contacts at all, consult the first three pics here for an illustration of the AGP card seated improperly and properly)

Good luck :)

Maybe you should have read directions first. If the computer powers on for a while when you press the botton, its in the right place. If its only spining for a sec when you plug it in and then no responing to the power button, then you might want to consult you manual for the proper palcements for your specific mb.

normally in my experiences the system usually works fine without the aux power connector... but a great tip in the hands of newbs, nowadays, always plug in the aux connector! :p

Why wouldn't you plug it in? Its no like it requires any additional expenditure of effort.
