Help! -- corrupted system file

My computer froze while playing a game, causing it to shut down. The next day, I tried to boot and it wouldn't begin to load Win XP. I got a message that there was a missing or corrupt file C:\Windows\system32\config\system. It also suggested that I try the repair console to repair the file. I tried that, but not sure what to do. I see commands for FIXMBR and FIXBOOT, but i dont know if that's what I need to use. I can't figure out how to "repair" an individual file. Could I copy that same file from another computer of mine (with Win XP) and use that?

If anyone has suggestions, i would appreciate it greatly. I don't want to have to reinstall Win XP and lose all my programs I have installed and set up.

Thanks,
Brian

I'm not sure about fixing a file, but in a different problem, someone mentioned the command
sfc /scannow
from the command line/console with the XP CD in to verify the system files.

The complete, but unrelated, message is here.

Just boot from your winXP CD and choose fix installation and it will find the corrupted file and replace it for you. I corrupted my kernel32.dll file by putting my sub too close to the comp hehehe.
