Help Coping the i386 files for win2k setup

i have been told that u can copy the i386 files to a hard drive and run a setup of windows 2k without the cd and you will never have to use the cd again (theoreticly) can someone give me the steps on how to do this on a new hard drive or point me to a post where it was explained
thanks

If you installed win2000 allready it's rather simple.
Find the I386 folder on the CD and just copy it to your
C drive or whichever.
I don't see why you would want to install the 2000 from HD
just install it from the cd and then copy the folder later
so you don't have to pop the win2000 cd in every time you wanna
add consoles or hardware.

O yeah I forgot to tell you that the win2000 cd
is bootable so you don't need the startup floppy.
When you turn on the computer go into your bios
and make sure that Cd is your first boot device.
And then save reboot, it will start booting from cd
and will give options on partitioning and formating.
Make at least two or three partitions and put win2000
by itself on C.

If you have a Win9x/DOS startup up floppy, you can boot up the system and start the Win2K install off the CD (or copy the i386 folder onto HD). Either way, it will be slow ... especially if SmartDrive isn't resident in memory.

CD is the way to go ... especially if slipstreamed.

for some reason when i try to install win2k on my system i get a never ending loop cause i get a error message saying unable to load operating system and i was told by a technician to copy the i386 contents to the new hard drive and run smartdrive to install it although i dont know how any sugestions

What is on the hard drive now? If Windows (any version) is already installed, copy the entire \i386 directory from the CD onto the hard drive. If nothing is on the drive, boot the system with a Win98 startup floppy, partition & format the drive, and then copy the i386 folder from there (I think xcopy can do this, right?) ... OR ... attach the hard drive to a system already running Windows and copy the directory.

Doing the copying in Windows is a little faster due to 32-bit instructions versus the 16-bit nature of DOS.

Once the files are on the hard drive, reboot with the Win98 floppy. Go into the i386 directory on the HD and run 'winnt' (I think that's the one).

make sure you copy it into a folder on c. Don't want all those files on the root.
Here is my suggestions for installing win2k(done it way to many times) 😉

fdisk and format your computer with a win98 bootdisk

If you copy the i386 folder to your hd, make sure it is in a folder on c:

run smartdrv first, otherwise you'll have to wait an hour or more for it to install.

run the winnt in the i386 folder to start the install.

make sure you are not overclocking your system while installing. You want it to be stable has possible.

Good luck.

oh, one more thing, make sure you are virus free.

heres what i do all the time as well. i just did this to install win2k AS as well. boot with a win98 cd or boot disk. make sure you either put the smartdrv file on the floppy or you have a win98 cd. fdisk, partition(if you want) and format all with the cd/floppy. i usually have a slave drive with all my backup stuff on it. when i boot up with the win98cd, i always choose boot with cdrom suport. then i go into the win98 dir of the win98 cd and load smartdrv. then i go into the i386 folder, wherever it may be, and run winnt.exe
soooo much faster than from cd if you ask me, but then again, i dont have bootable cds either 🙂
