my school uses macs so they are good for programs such as SETI@home and rc5. so I told my beloved english teacher about SETI. being as smart and strong willed as she is, she's not easily persuaded and fooled....so she's very skeptical of SETI; plus, I think she's smart enough to see through my kissing up. anyway, I need you guys to convince her that SETI is totally safe and then I'll email her the link to this post. whenever she's enlightening her students with her infinite knowledge (i.e. teaching), her computer would always be on: running idle so I thought it was such a shame to be wasting precious clock cycles.

Nice recruiting attempt :)(BTW macs are much better at SETI than they are at RC5) ,
I'll start be saying that many big companys sponsor SETI@home ,this is shown on their front page.

Here are some of there sponsors ,The Planetary society,The University of California Digital Media Innovation Program ,Sun Microsystems ,Paramount Pictures ,Fuji Film Computer Products,IBM developer Works,Quantum Corporation,Intel & many others. In other words there no 'back street' small time project.
Millions of people have downloaded the software.

I've run SETI on about 6 PC's with 64Mb RAM or more ,with no probs ,many others have run it on many dozens of machines ,I'll let them add their input :)

Anyway ,doesn't she want to join in one of the greatest searches? :)

As an English teacher, she may be able to use the idea of communicating with another technological society to stimulate thought and discussion with her students on possible forms of language/communications the ETs may use and thus get the students to think in other ways about our own language.

All she should need as proof is to go to the seti@home website. Think about it, would Berkeley back any project that was going to be destructive or illegal? I've seen several programs on TLC and DISC channels about the seti project that are very informative as well.

Your teacher is an educator and hopefully she will be willing to help science expand our knowledge of the universe. Don't try kissing up, just tell her the facts.

Ask her to help out the seti@home project in the quest for discovery and knowledge. We may not have found ET but we have helped to discover and reconfirm the existence of several stars of various types.:)

<< All she should need as proof is to go to the seti@home website. Think about it, would Berkeley back any project that was going to be destructive or illegal? >>

she had to leave when I was telling her that so I couldn't really elaborate so she was still skeptical.

<< Don't try kissing up, just tell her the facts. >>

I intentionally made my kissing up look so obvious so that it would at least make her laugh and think "you're such a dork."

also, maybe the number of personal accts might help convince her: how many of you here are running SETI?

There's 2.3 million+ users out there but a lot of them aren't "active". Our team has 400+ members and of that we have about 25% of them active. If our team is typical I'd guess the actual number of active SETI users is somewhere around 600,000. That's A LOT of users. If SETI caused problems I think we'd hear about it.

Assure here that SETI is safe for the MAC's and is a great way to get people interested in computers, the internet, and Anandtech. After all, this website is an awesome reference/learning tool!

EmperorNero, maybe when you get more time to fill her in on who is actually conducting the project she won't be too skeptical of the validity of seti.:)

<<I think she's smart enough to see through my kissing up. anyway>>

I just took this that you were trying to fool her through sucking up.;) Kissing up might work if it's obvious to her that your kidding.:)

It might help if she saw some of the Seti Groups out there. Be sure to point out the educational facilities that are sponsering teams.:D

Good luck with your assimilation attempt. We'd love to have another mac join the effort.:)
