I'm currently studying abroad in Japan, and am living with a family that has Yahoo! Broadband DSL. They have a wireless network running from a BB (Broadband) Trio3-G, and since none of their computers had wireless cards, they all use IODATA WN-B11/USBSL adapters to access the network. My computer has an internal wireless card, but it doesn't even pick up their wireless network. (It does, however, pick up the rest of the neighborhood, which seem to be running behind conventional routers.) I checked the IODATA Quick Connect utility on their computer and it says the network is running on channel 13, and apparently it also has 64-bit WEP. (This was all in Japanese, and I'm nowhere near fluent, so it was a bit rough-going.) I'd asked my host father if the network had a password before and he said no, but he knows next to nothing about computers so I believe he just let the technician set it up for him.
My question is this: is it even possible to access that channel with my wireless card? The highest channel I've ever seen used is 11. Also, if it is, how do I go about doing so? And finally, if the network is encrypted, where would I look on their computer to find the access key? I think the Trio3-G is a router, but I can't get wireless access so I don't know what its host address would be. I'm currently plugged in via CAT-5, but since the router is in the kitchen, it's not really a viable solution. I would really love to have wireless access from my room, but I'm not comfortable asking my host father to call Yahoo! DSL and ask them what's up, because he wouldn't know where to start asking questions and my Japanese isn't good enough to talk about something so technical. So, any suggestions or advice to get my computer connected to their network would be highly appreciated.
As a sidenote, I already tried using their adapter with the Quick Connect software on my computer, but it still needed to be configured with the same information, I suspect, that my wireless card would need. (Unless my card is incapable of any channel above 11.) So, I don't think the router is hard-wired to accept only connections from the USB adapters.
