Help connecting laptop to hdtv

I am trying to connect a latop to an hdtv for a friend of mine. The TV is a JVC 42" 1080p-

and the laptop is a Thinkpad R61

The R61 has the intel 965gm chipset, x3100.

Will a vga to component cable work? I realize a scan converter would work, however a $10 cable would be the obvious first choice for her. From what I have read, it seems that the R61's chipset supports tv-out through vga, and therefore should theoretically be able to output analog component output to the tv. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know why that wouldn't work. Admittedly, my only experience here is with Macs and digital outputs, but I'm sure that'll work just fine, with either composite or component.

well... you do need tv-out over vga for a simple cable (only $2 or so on ebay) to work. otherwise, you'd need a converter (closer to $100). I haven't come across any laptops (or video cards for that matter, seems like it may be more intended for professional/CAD cards) that have tv-out over vga but if you say you found info stating it does, then $2 or $10 wouldn't be a bad try.
